To expect my GP to understand that I am not a crazy Mum and my DD is really ill?

I know this is going to come out as a (badly typed) rant so apologies in advance.

My DD has had a fever, diarrhoea and other symptoms like a rash and vomiting (some of then on and off) for over a week. She has had Calpol for the entire time at my GPs recommendation. Then she developed joint pain, really chapped lips, strawberry red tongue covered in blisters and a puffy face. She was screaming in pain at one point. So we've been to the GPs twice and the out of hours once but they keep saying viral infection. I do understand that but surely she should be improving by now? I have done the tumbler test and it's not that sort of rash. My mum used to be a paediatric nurse and when I told her of all of DD's symptoms, she said it sounds just like Kawasaki syndrome. I Wikipedia'd it (dangerous, I know) but there was my daughter's face, with exactly the symptoms. It's rare but can be VERY serious. AIBU to go shooting off up there for for the fourth time, laptop in hand?

Jumponit, how is your dd now?

If she hasn't started to improve yet I really would go to A&E.

My dd had those same symptoms when she was 6 mths, we took her to docs 3 times and were told virus. On the 4th visit Dr said take her to hosp now.
Got there and Kawasaki mentioned by junior doc but menigitis or other infection also suspected. She was tested for tons of things (lumbar puncture etc etc) and meningitis ruled out. Consultant said was not Kawasaki as did not have ALL the symptoms, he believed it was a urine infection. She was given IV anti-biotics, and was on half hourly observations, fed intravenously (as she had been unable to keep any milk down when feeding)- all very scary.
However, 4 days later no improvement whatsoever. We had trusted the consultant up to this point but decided to look on the internet ourselves as she was making no progress. Like you we saw pics of Kawasaki and thought- that is exactly it!
Luckily for us our original consultant was away (golfing) so we had another- we asked him to look again at the possibility of Kawasaki- he said i think you're right, we'll treat her for it.
She was given an IV infusion of gamma-globulin and within about two hours of them starting it she was returning to her normal self.
We were so lucky that she has had no lasting damage to her heart or brain (she has had tons of tests to check) but we were SO LUCKY to have got her treated in time.

Please do trust your instincts.

Forgot to say- your dd sounds like she has a lot of the symptons. You need 4 out of the 5 principle symptoms for a diagnosis (original consulant ruled it out for our dd because she did not have all 5). But it is also possible to have incomplete kawasaki where not all symptoms are present.

Also, please don't panic 'cos good chance of it being something else too, but best to get thoroughly checked out.

Just wondering how you are getting on? It is such a worry when little ones are ill.

katiestar · 21/01/2011 19:42

sounds very like scarlet fever

Agree sounds like scarlet fever.
Did they give you penicillin ?
That's antibiotic for SF.

Did they say what the bacterial infection is precisely ?
SF is a Streptococcus pyogenes infection.
