You know, when hearing about some drama or accident involving an animal - I always get anxious that the animal survived - even more than the human if I'm honest Wink

YANBU, I'm with you on this one! :)

There was a story on the news the other night about the floods in Australia/Brazil (?) where a woman was hoisted to safety on a rope and had to let go of her dog who was washed away in the flood.

I worried about the dog and I don't even like dogs that much.

ZuzuandZara · 18/01/2011 20:37

I saw a really distressing piece of footage a few days ago regarding the floods in Brazil.

A lady was on the roof of her house, the water was up the the roof and extremely fast flowing. She had her small dog under her arm. A man on the next building threw a rope to her and she jumped, managed to pull her self up onto the next building, without her dog. Sad I cried. I cried for the dog. I cried because she was in such a dangerous, desperate situation and all she bloody had left was her dog. And I cried for the floods in Australia and Sri Lanka.

TheFarSide · 18/01/2011 20:38

Yeah Zuzu that's the one I saw too.

ZuzuandZara · 18/01/2011 20:38

cross posts.

I can still see it in my mind clearly and it still upsets me.

Ormirian · 18/01/2011 20:38

Same here. And then I feel guilty.

TheFarSide · 18/01/2011 20:39

Dogs can swim instictively though can't they? The dog might have survived!

taintedpaint · 18/01/2011 20:41

That's just made me cry now. :(

I am going to hope beyond hope that dog survived.

I can't stop thinking about it.

ZuzuandZara · 18/01/2011 20:41

TheFarSide, yes, but the water was so fast wasn't it? I know there are people and animals dying in these floods all over the world, but when you see a bit of footage it sticks in your mind and I keep replaying it.

ZuzuandZara · 18/01/2011 20:42

sorry tainted.

taintedpaint · 18/01/2011 20:44

It's not your fault, I know these things happen. I'm just going to try to convince myself that poor dog survived. :(

Shewhoshallnotbenamed · 18/01/2011 20:45

I saw that too, it really upset me - mainly because she had tried to save it, so it obviously meant something to her.

I hate to say it but I doubt it survived - the power of the water was horrendous.

DD saw it (I had turned on Daybreak and it was the first thing we saw - great way to start the day Sad) I told her that the dog was found further down the road (hate lying but DD is 7 and very easily upset at the moment!)

Then there was the relief that the woman was hoisted to safety, I bet she feels such guilt about letting go - but her instincts kicked in and she needed both hands to hold that rope or she'd have drowned.

So sad, but no YANBU, I always look for the line that says "the dog did/didn't survive".

BellaMagnificat · 18/01/2011 20:59

Oh that is sad about the Brazilian lady. Remember Katrina and how the rescuers forced people to abndon their pets? Can't say how we would act in so extreme a situation but am pretty certain I would find that impossible.

On a happer note I recall a story about a call to the RSPCA about a pony stuck in mud.
Whne they got there, it was fine.

He just had little legs Grin

Bella, your stumpy legged pony story made me Smile

tyler80 · 18/01/2011 21:34

YAB a tiny bit U

I know it was said in jest, the "even more than the human" bit.

But to hear every year of people who lose their fathers/mothers/sons/daughters because they jumped in a river/lake to save a dog makes me sad. Especially because 9 times out of 10 the dog survives.

I love dogs, but to give your life up for one...

tyler80 · 18/01/2011 21:35

But on a lighter note

The pony story (includes pics)Grin

Tomorrowslookingfine · 18/01/2011 22:31

YANBU :(

Sierra19 · 18/01/2011 22:47

YANBU. I am a 999 op for fire service and we ALWAYS feel more sad about animals and follow up what happened to them with the crews. We do sometimes with people. I think it is partly that you have to distance yourselves from the humans because you don't know them and to get tied up with everything would drive you nuts.
