to think that 2.5yo shouldn't wear school uniform?

My friends DD goes to a nursery attached to a Prep School. They are required to wear school uniform from 2.5 when they join the Pre Prep Dept. She looks ridiculous in her uniform as everything is too big? Is this right?

private school may have compulsory school uniform

state school = non-compulsory til secondary IIRC

You say the child looks ridiculous, I'll bet her parents think she looks cute

What's it to you?

genuine q btw

Don't see the problem myself. DD is 2.10 and she absolutely loves prancing around in DS's school uniform. She would be thrilled to go to a nursery wearing it!!

hobbohobbo · 18/01/2011 20:10

her excuse is that at least all the kids look the same

i just think its too early considering she will only get to wear her real clothes at weekends only.

what do you mean "is this right?"

a LOT of nurseries attached to schools get them to wear uniforms, which is presumably why you can now get uniforms from age 3ish upwards

it isn't out of the ordinary, and certainly doesn't surprise me in a private school

perhaps her parents bought a larger uniform so she keeps it longer.

i am not sure why you are worried about this?

thisisyesterday · 18/01/2011 20:11

i really don't think a 2.5 year old will care at all if she only gets to wear "normal" clothes after school and at weekends.

you're totally overthinking this

StataLover · 18/01/2011 20:11

At my dd's state nursery (aged 3/4) they wear uniform. I hate it for that age - don't see the point. I know it's not compulsory but all the children wear it.

poissonrouge · 18/01/2011 20:11

dd's nursery had a uniform. Bloody brilliant. I didn't have to think about what she was wearing. She got her uniform covered in glue and paint, leaving her home clothes nice. Easy to keep track of. Practical. Everyone the same. Am in favour.

Uniform comes in small sizes- not sure why everything would need to be so big really.
Uniform is great - I think all schools should have it, it stops those whose parents spend nothing on clothes from feeling left/singled out.

Geepers · 18/01/2011 20:12

My daughter goes to a nursery that has a uniform and she looks adorable and loves it.

usualsuspect · 18/01/2011 20:13

I hate school uniform on any age...but to make a 2 year old wear one is particularly ridiculous..but some parents seem to be under the illusion that the stricter the uniform the better the school

PrettyCandles · 18/01/2011 20:13

My elder two dc went to a nursery where they wore uniform: red polo shirt, red tracksuit, red shorts and cap in summer, most items logo'd. Practical, easy, and sensible.

OTOH, the 3yos I see around here wearing shirt-and-tie uniforms make me cringe. It just seems so wrong - And almost wll of them are at nurseries attached to state schools.

CaptainNancy · 18/01/2011 20:15

YABVU btw- she won't have chosen the school because of the uniform.
You sound jealous of her choices.

Hulababy · 18/01/2011 20:16

Can't see the problem TBH and ime many places do school uniform items from age 2-3y these days.

DD's prep school now has a nursery. there is a voluntary uniform for the preschool of grey trousers/shorts/skirts, white badged polo top and red badged sweatshirt - so not the same as the rest of the school. Pretty much every child wears it somost parents using the preschool must not object.

i think they look sweet, and TBH I can see why a uniform like this is beneficial to parents - just wreck uniform, wear it when stained and marked over and over, don't ruin home clothes.

Huffymuffy · 18/01/2011 20:17

YABU it's practical and cute. When my DS went to full time nursery I used to buy bundles of tops and jogger bottoms from ebay as their clothes get trashed. Uniform would have been a godsend. As it is I've bought DD sweatshirts and t shirts with her nursery logo on. She's 2.5 and loves being like her big brother. I have never understood dressing kids up for nursery.

Clunge · 18/01/2011 20:17

My kids have wore uniform since they started nursery at 3. I prefer them to wear it. Saves their decent stuff for at home; plus they look the same as the other kids, don't feel left out and feel "grown up".

coldtits · 18/01/2011 20:17

In what way is it wrong?

JemimaMop · 18/01/2011 20:18

Mine wore uniform from 2.5 when they started nursery school. I loved it. They didn't get their own clothes dirty and I didn't have to think about what to dress them in each morning.

simonedeboudoir · 18/01/2011 20:19

My two dds attended a pre school attached to a private prep and wore a modified version of the school uniform (sweatshirt / polo top / little skirt etc in school colours).

Rather than 'ridiculous', OP, they looked cute, gorgous and smart, along with all the other children.

YABU. Why so you care so much anyway?

usualsuspect · 18/01/2011 20:19

I wouldn't want my 2 year old to look the same as everyone else

hobbohobbo · 18/01/2011 20:20

i have a DD same age with her who goes to a different nursery where she wears her own clothes. Its fun for me to buy clothes for her.

her DD will need a blazer and a long coat next year! i think the school is taking the piss tbh coz its very expensive the uniform. I spend half the money on the uniform to pay for my kids clothes- who actually gets to wear them!

DD has just turned 3 and wears school uniform for nursery. It's not compulsary but they all wear it. She looks absolutely edible in it. Not sure why the uniform would have to be too big? They had uniforms in the supermarket for 2-3 years when I was shopping for DDs. And surely the school would stock it in the size of their youngest pupils?

thisisyesterday · 18/01/2011 20:21

but hobbohobbo... it's your friend's choice to make! she clearly doesn't have a problem with it, so why do you?
this isn't your child. it's JUST clothes.... it really doesn't matter
