Why is it when a person sits next a person on quite a full bus do they jump up at the first opportunity to sit in a empty seat ,I notice it happen quite a lot and thinks it looks like the other person smells so bad they can't bear to. Sit next to them ( it happens to me and I know I don't smell) also at my bus stop there is a group of very chatty friendly women who when the bus comes all sit in different seats am I the only one who thinks this is weird ?

I prefer to sit by the window so will sometimes move if a window seat become available. Then I gaze out the window in a daydream for the duration ............

Why does everyone think "is it about me"???? (ie do I smell, don't they like me???) - I think that shows a self esteem in need of boosting??

Though you do get a few smelly ones on the bus - I move from them too if possible.

I want to know why the bus driver I had today, instead at stopping by the BUS STOP sign where on several occasions frail/elderly/disabled & Pram toting parents were patiently waiting, stopped way in front of EVERY STOP, as close to a lamppost/pole as he possibly could, so every single one of these poor people had a struggle embarking. I was upstairs mentally stomping on bus drivers head. What an inconsiderate plonker.

It's also annoying when they stop at the back of the queue so people who've just arrived get on first and you end up having to stand.

LDNmummy · 18/01/2011 15:58

I always move to a new seat if the bus empties out a bit. I like my space on the bus and as wimpleoftheballet said, bus time is thinking time. I can't think clearly if I'm crammed up to someone I don't know. People move from sitting next to me when seats become available and I consider it an act of good manners. When they don't, I question thier sanity TBH.

As for the buggies in disabled spots, I thought the space was also for mothers and buggies, I'm pretty sure most mothers feel its a natural entitlement to use that space. TBH, if I had to get the bus with a buggy I would be very grateul if for that space. I think its a much nicer way to co habitat, especially in a big and overcrowded city like LDN to allow small mercies.

Bus politics terrify me! For instance, if i get on a busy bus and there is one completely empty seat, i immediately panic and think "Why is noone else sitting there?" Is it covered in wee/about to collapse/just been vacated by a smelly person?
Also, if i'm sitting in the window seat and the bus starts to fill up, i fret until someone sits next to me so i don't look like i smell. I worry that i actually smile hopefully at people coming on to the bus (which could actually explain why noone sits next to me)
I also remember when i stayed with my parents, they lived on the last stop on a lengthy bus journey. What started out as a busy bus ended, some 40 mins later, with me and one other woman squashed onto the one seat on an otherwise completely empty bus
It's a minefield

Someone sitting right next to me when there's an empty seat available is my Pet Hate. Why wouldn't you move? I hate that touching-thigh thing. I don't want my thigh to be anywhere near a stranger's thigh. I'm always delighted when my seat-mate moves somewhere else, and suspicious/irritated when they don't.

I also prefer the window seat, so if one of those is free I nab it.

usualsuspect · 18/01/2011 16:38

I would move if a free seat came up ...I have long legs and hate sitting all squashed up ..I've tripped people over before now with my sticking out in the aisle Blush

usualsuspect · 18/01/2011 16:42

legs*

arcticwind · 18/01/2011 17:50

interesting that you all hate the person sitting on the outside with an empty seat by the window - that would be me then Blush but not because I am selfish but because I am claustrophobic and cannot be 'shut in' anywhere, even on a bus seat.
I always sit on the aisle on a train and in the cinema and won't go in lifts. However, I always have my bag on my knee if the bus gets busy and look ready to move if anyone comes remotely near me.....

TheMeow · 18/01/2011 18:38

I prefer the inside seat because then I can look out the window and don't have to look at anyone else.

But, I have a history of being a nutter magnet so I am very suspicious of anyone who doesn't move to an empty seat so YABU. It's a matter of personal space and I don't want to be that close to someone I don't know if I can help it.

mommmmyof2 · 18/01/2011 18:46

Somtimes I feel like I wanto to move depends on who I am sitting next to because sometimes it can be cramped, and I end up half hanging off the chair.

But then I have a little conversation in my head weather to move or not, as I do wonder If I am being rude to move and the person would have the same view as op, or if I stay sat there someone may think I am weird for not moving!

I think it depends on the person who you are sitting next to but hey we are not mind readers, so I usually base my decision on 1)how long I have left on my journey 2)weather I am hanging off the seat and 3) If I can actually be bothered Grin

All this to sit on a bus chair Confused

JamieLeeCurtis · 18/01/2011 18:50

I prefer to sit by the window so that's why I move. And actually, I think that if I didn't move, the person next to me might think I fancy them or something. I thought most people like their space - bit like when you go into a cinema, you don't sit next to someone else, but spread out evenly.

And as mommy said - if you are sitting next to a bloke, often you are getting squashed and pushed half off the seat because they seem to need to open their legs very wide (to accommodate their big manhoods, one assumes)

NoFlashPhotography · 18/01/2011 20:22

I would move to a window seat and find it quite odd if somebody doesn't. I can't really say its to look out the window as they're usually that filthy you can't see anything.

I just hate sitting on the aisle seat - especially on a crowded bus where you're likely to be hit around the head by somebody's oversized shoulder bag.

mommmmyof2 · 18/01/2011 20:48

Talking about buses and changing the subject a tad, I was on a bus today, worse ever bus journey I have ever had.I really did think I was going to die in some awful crash!
Anyone seen the film speed?!
Luckly I was next to the window else I think I would have been on the floor on several occasions!

Mrswhiskerson · 19/01/2011 08:26

Omg can't believe I'm the weirdo that doesn't move when a seat becomes available ,personally I don't really mind sitting next to people though obviously I sit on a empty seat if there is one , I just think it looks a bit rude when someone jumps out of the seat the second a empty one becomes available like they cannot BEAR to sit nex to that person for another second. Rofl at sitting nextto that lady on a empty bus I have been there it is a minefield. Just this morning I had to sit next to a really weird ex boyfriend and spent forty minutes pretending I did not know him ,it was awkward .

I avoid all this hassle by sitting on one of the single seats near the front of the bus. Still occassionally get the odd person wanting to show me all their lovely bargains from shoefayre, but most of the time they leave me alone.
