I've just downloaded the app for free and bought myself a Tilly Bagshawe Ebook and it works perfectly :)

Eeek - is it?! Its my birthday next week and I have asked for an Iphone AND a kindle! I am a complete technophobe and thought they were completely different things! Educate me please!!

CMOTdibbler · 17/01/2011 14:37

It works, but no way could I read fo extended periods on a smartphone like I can on my Kindle

BlingLoving · 17/01/2011 14:37

YABU.

I have kindle on my iphone. And a Kindle. I would not give up my kindle for anything. The screen is definitely better, turning the pages is more comfortable and I can read more than a paragraph at the time!

Also, the Kindle app chews battery on the smart phone.

The iphone app is a nice extra, but for regular, ongoing reading, you can't beat the kindle.

Chil1234 · 17/01/2011 14:37

How big is the screen on your smart-phone? Wait until you've read the whole book before judging.

BoobyMcLeaky · 17/01/2011 14:38

My DH has kindle app on his smart phone, I find it hard to use because the screen is quite small. I thought the screen on the kindle would be bigger?

ZillionChocolate · 17/01/2011 14:38

YABU.

  1. Why do you care? Unless its your friends who are then moaning that they don't have any money.
  1. I have an iPhone and was bought a kindle for Christmas. They're different devices for different things. I'm happy to read odds bits on a phone but am looking forward to taking the kindle on long trips/holidays.

Have you seen a kindle? I told MIL not to buy DH one as he has an iphone and an ipad but am so impressed I think I was probably wrong.

IngridFletcher · 17/01/2011 14:38

The screen is too small and the kindle is so much nicer to read from.

BoobyMcLeaky · 17/01/2011 14:39

Ooops, x-post Grin

nbyet · 17/01/2011 14:40

I have an iphone and a kindle and would rather give up the iphone than the kindle. It's brilliant! And it's SO much easier on the eyes.

KalokiMallow · 17/01/2011 14:40

YABU, they've apparently done something clever with the Kindle screen so it is easier on your eyes to read for long periods.

LtEveDallas · 17/01/2011 14:41

YABU

If you use Kindle for iPhone the battery lasts about 3 hours.

The Kindle battery last 2 weeks.

No contest.

loopylou6 · 17/01/2011 14:44

Hmm why do I care? Because I'm a nice person and thought it'd be good to save people money if at all poss.

I have the HTC desire, the screen is rather large and you can controll the back lighting so its not too bright on the eyes.

I purchased a Kindle had it two days before I listed on eBay.

I wanted a book reader that was backlit, not something I could not read in the dark! Found it incredibly frustrating.

loopylou6 · 17/01/2011 14:46

Have no idea about battery life as I only read for 30 mins. How much are Kindles anyway? about 130 quid?

OP posts:
Chil1234 · 17/01/2011 14:49

£111 for a basic... btw Fabbychic didn't you read the reviews before you bought one? Shock Not having a backlit screen is a major selling point and comes up time after time!

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 17/01/2011 14:49

It still eats battery, though. The Kindle (and Sony eReader, etc., etc.) has a static display so (oversimplifying madly) it only uses battery to turn the pages.

loopylou6 · 17/01/2011 14:51

Fab if you have a smart phone download the Kindle its brilliant.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 17/01/2011 14:54

Also have a kindle and an iPhone. The iPhone is fine in an emergency but you wouldn't want to read war and peace on it.

silverfrog · 17/01/2011 14:58

I have an htc desire, with Kindle app, my itouch has the Kindle app, as does my iPad.

I still have a kindle.

I used the apps for a long time (9 months ish) before I got a Kindle.

and I would have survived carrying on doing so. but I bought more books than I do now, and only really used the apps for holidays, or for hospital appts etc.

now I have a Kindle, I buy a lot less books (I do still buy some, but general fiction buy it and give away stuff I don't buy as books anymore, only as ebooks; before, I owuld have bought more actual books and only the odd ebook)

it is ok reading on the smart phones/ipod, but screen size not brilliant.

it's also fine reading on the ipad, but it's a bit cumbersome to read in bed, i find.
my kindle is perfect. feels a lot like a book to hold (I have a leather case for it), and is not backlit - one of the things I found most irritating about reading on ipod/ipad/phone in bed, tbh - far too bright, even with the screen turned right down.

kindles are fab, and have a place alongside smartphones, imo.

the ipad/kindle debate is more of a personal preference one, I reckon.

A bit like having an iphone and then buying an ipod touch?

silverfrog · 17/01/2011 15:03

there is aninteresting study, as well, which has researched sleep quality and backlit screens.

apparently (and I am not naive enough to not see it was entirely funded by ereader manufacturers), reading on a backlit screen/watching films on them etc before you go to sleep leads to crap quality of sleep - more interrupted nights, not feelign rested enough in the morning, etc. I think they likened it to sleeping wiht the main light on - you know that gritty, I haven't really slept, kind of feeling?

I found this interesting, becasue I only read about it after I had got my Kindle, and was reading that in bed, instead of using my phone/ipod (which I had started doing less and less of, as it was not as comfortable anyway).

after a couple of days of using my Kindle I noticed I was sleeping better. I put this down to me actually reading a decent amount of a book, and getting back to old habits (have always read a ot before sleeping, and do feel unsettled if I don't), and then I read this study.

as I said, I found it quite interesting.

I have a Dell Streak with a Kindle App. It's a 5 inch screen, I've read whole books on it with no eye strain or battery issues. It means I can have a book with me all the time, as my phone is always with me, and is considerably less bulky than a Kindle.

Wouldn't buy a Kindle now, although I wanted one before.

exexpat · 17/01/2011 15:16

I have a kindle app on my smartphone, which I use for reading free classics if I unexpectedly have to spend time waiting somewhere. I wouldn't want to read on the small screen for more than 15 or 20 minutes, I think.

I've been thinking about getting a proper kindle for travelling etc but just looked through the books currently in my amazon shopping basket, and about half aren't available on kindle, and of the ones that are, only one is (marginally) cheaper on kindle than the paper copy, and the others cost two or three pounds more on kindle. Don't think I'll be buying one for a while...
