Long story.

But I was late paying house insurance last year - they didnt send reminder. I phoned them very late and after some discussion they agreed to keep policy going(ancient subsidence issue that wont happen again but got to keep it going just in case and makes house more saleable)

They then cancelled policy in summer WITHOUT telling me.

We then had attempted burglary in autumn where I phoned to be told you are not insured Shock. Quite unbelievable at the time

I phoned the insurance company again and again to try to sort out. Never phoned me back.

Took them to Insurance Ombudsman (so glad we have one of these).

Surprisingly ha ha have now agreed to reinstate policy. But I was was always clear that I wanted compensation for the stress etc of not being insured .

The premium is about £440 annually. Is £1000 ok? I would give half away. I just want them to not get away scot free with their dreadful behaviour!

I would expect reasonable reimbursement for your genuine expenses in following this up, but compensation for stress? thats a bit OTT IMO

what does the ombudsman say?

and what excuse did the insurers (can you name and shame?) give for cancellation of policy with no notification?

scurryfunge · 17/01/2011 14:24

Is it too late to claim for the burglary? It seems you may have been out of pocket for that.

So you were paying premiums but not insured?

Good luck with that.

I used to work for the ombudsman and can tell you that there is no chance you'll get £1k compensation. Any comp awards are very modest indeed (think £50)- the aim of the ombudsman is to get you put back to your rightful position rather than see you compensated. If you approached the insurer directly they'd likely tell you to get stuffed since they've settled the matter finally in accordance with the ombudsman's adjudication. Sorry but think you've got naff all chance of getting anything.

why should tehy pay more than they owe? just to make you feel like you have won something and be able to say "that' showed them"?

some people are strange. claim for what you are owed. the fact you say you will give half away tells me this is just about silly personal vengeance. tehy are an insurance company, believe me, tehy don't care if tehy think they got off scot free, you are a number to them.

Why would you??????

You'll be lucky. We tried to get our £75 phone bill and £150 worth of charges back from the ombudsman, ( due to total incompetence on the part of Prudential and Lloyds - yes I am naming you) and we were told that they had done nothing wrong.
