to feed my child this after my cooking malfunction...?

I've just cooked a gammon joint and when waking it out the slow cooker, found the plastic "remove before cooking" shield from the end of the bone.
Doesn't look melted or damaged in any way.
I'm going to eat it. But should I let my 14month old DS eat it as well? (The gammon, not the plastic shield Grin)
Or am I being PFB-ish??

Done that more than once and eaten it still alive and kicking. Have fed it to kids and they are OK too. I don't think they would be allowed to wrap food in anything that might kill you.

BUT 14 months old I wouldn't risk it just in case any toxins that would normally give an adult a slight tummy ache are present as they may do more damage to a child of that age.

No medical or food industry experience but my kids have survived my parenting for 23 and 25 years respectively.

TorcherQueenie · 16/01/2011 16:04

I do it every bloody time without fail Grin all still here and gammon usually very tasty too.

Catsmamma · 16/01/2011 16:12

i certainly would!

charliesmommy · 16/01/2011 16:15

Nothing wrong with it at all.

I would be more worried about the salt content in the gammon to be honest!.. lol..

wizardora · 16/01/2011 16:37

I don't think I would tbh, I remember leaving a plastic spatula in the oven once (don't ask!) and cooking with the plastic fumes for a week before realising what the puddle at the bottom of the oven was... I called the doctor for some advice as I had heard plastic fumes can be dangerous and she told me a story about how she had been served a chicken with plasic still on it in a restaurant and how bad for you it was - along with BBQ's for some reason!?

ilovemyhens · 16/01/2011 17:33

Gammon is too salty for a 14 month old unless it's been well soaked in water first.

Odysseus · 16/01/2011 18:25

Thank-you to all for the advice re the plastic aspect. I didn't give him it.

And, er, thanks to the unsolicited advice re salt! Not an issue methinks!

How did you cook it in the slow cooker? Did you put anything else in?
Just got a slow cooker.

Odysseus · 16/01/2011 19:03

This time I only added the gammon, water, and superfluous plastic. If I were you, I'd leave the plastic out. Grin
Just to reassure ilovemyhens I soaked in 3 fresh batches of water before cooking.
I then did it an hour on high setting for every kg of weight. Then I turned it down to warm until I was ready to serve.
I have also cooked it previously with mulled wine and also in cider with oranges and lemons, both of which were tasty. I've heard doing it in coke (!) is also a winner, but haven't been brave enough to try that yet.

It'll be fine, give a titchy bit and bulk up on veg instead!

Cant be any more carcingenic than Angel delight or orange squash from the 1970's!

backwardpossom · 16/01/2011 19:54

Boohoo Last time I put gammon in the slow cooker, I put the joint in and covered it with full fat Coca Cola and left it on low for about 8 hours - it was delicious. :)

Boohooyou · 16/01/2011 19:57

mmm sounds interesting backward nothing else just gammon and coke?
Odysseus will try without the plastic on this one !

backwardpossom · 16/01/2011 20:33

That was it :) I think technically you should then roast it for a bit in the oven, but it didn't need it, if you know what I mean? Someone recommended cherry coke to me, too, but I haven't tried that yet.

huntersmum · 16/01/2011 20:43

I have just cooked gammon in coke for Sunday dinner. Quarter 2-3 red onions and put them in a heavy casserole dish with the gammon joint, a can of coke and 2 tbs balsamic vinegar. Put the lid on and cook in the oven for a couple of hours or more depending on the size of the joint. The coke reduces and with the onions makes a lovely sauce for the gammon - I thickened it with a bit of cornflour and it doesn't taste like coke at all.

Odysseus · 16/01/2011 21:01

Oooo I'm going to try it next time!

I was going to do honey, mustard and cider but think i'll do the coke thing with onions aswell.
