To think smoke caused babies blocked nose?

Ds3 is 1 month old, we don't smoke and he has never been around cigarette smoke before. We took him to my mums house for a couple of hours yesterday, she smokes in the house, but didn't while we were there. I could smell it and feel it at the back of my throat and that night DS3 was really snuffly, he's fine now and has never had it before, could it be from the smoke as he isn't used to it?

yes unfortunately it could be from the smoke.

His clothes stank of smoke too ( Angry at myself)

I would say yes. I am very sensitive to smoke and can fill my sinus 'fill up' if I am in the vacinity of smoke. If BF tries a sneaky one in a downstairs loo and I am in bed I can feel it, even if he does have an extractor on. Angry

I do think some are more sensitive to it than others, babies especially so

My baby gets snuffly and coughs after he has been around smoke :-(

Unfortunately you can't always keep them away from it, but in future perhaps try to invite your mum to your house or go out somewhere instead of going to hers.

Yes, my DCs get blocked noses when they visit my parents. Both parents smoke, but not in the house although the place still stinks and we have to wash their clothes when we get back.

I find the Priton/Piriteze and own-brands useful to cut the reaction to smoke.

I think I'll just avoid her house from now on

Question...Did you go in the car?

Whenever my dd travels in the car she seems to get a stuffy nose - I think it's something to do with the heating/air con etc.

I use saline nasal spray when i think it's quite bad - it seems to do the trick.

wizardora · 15/01/2011 21:22

We did go in the car but he travels in the car most days and has always been fine

for me it depends on the length of the journey..eg I drove from Cheshire to Glasgow for Christmas and when we arrived my dd had a right stuffy nose...even though we often stopped for fresh air/feeds etc

I reckon in your case it must be the smoke, difficult to ask someone to quit smoking in their own house though, unfortunately you'll need to stay away. Sorry

I'm certain 1 month is too young to use piriton etc.

I was told not to use anti histamines below the age of one year.

PigletJohn · 16/01/2011 15:37

Oh, only a month? Sorry i didn't take that in. Yes, it does say 1 year up on the bottle of syrup.
