That means you, Betterware, Avon and the like. Dog eared catalogue appeared on the mat last week, it was from Betterware but had no sticker on it or sleeve like they usually do if you're meant to put them back out. I promptly stuck it in recycling and forgot about it.

Now I keep getting cards while I'm out. They want it back. They're not giving up. I feel guilty. Recycling has gone. It's like avoiding the Jehovahs Witnesses all over again...

YANBU

I totally agree

Once its posted through my door, its my property. I had a disagreement with a betaware person on this once. I had thrown the booklet away and a week or so later she demanded it back. I didnt aske for it, it was junk mail. Imnot holding on to junk for someone who chooses to shove it through my door.

Don't feel bad - they will have learnt a valuable lesson.

Goblinchild · 15/01/2011 09:55

I leave a note on the catalogue the first time, telling them that I'll recycle any unsolicited mail. My recycle wheeliebin is next to the front door, and the second time around, I tell them they are welcome to find it in the bin if they put everything back afterwards.
I hate the things.

I leave mine out on the doormat in the rain a couple of days before they are due to collect it. They soon stop delivering to me.

snowpoint · 15/01/2011 10:14

Glad it's not just me. I really don't begrudge them trying to earn some money, it's just the attitude which goes with it. Surely they must expect a certain percentage of loss when they post unrequested mail.

And tbh, I don't really want a stained, manky old catalogue which has obviously been kicking around someone else's house either. Hmm

YANBU. I put a note in the first time I receive it asking them not to leave it again and if they do then it goes in the recycling.

verytellytubby · 15/01/2011 10:22

YANBU

Betterware woman was so rude to me when I told her I'd recycled it. I didn't realise.

southeastastra · 15/01/2011 10:26

blimey get a grip, would it really kill you to put it to one side or even outside (though obviously not in recycling)

TrillianAstra · 15/01/2011 10:27

If junk mail comes through my door it ends up in the recycling bin.

What, you say, there was a sticker on it?

I don't read junk mail, I put it in the recycling bin, after separating paper from plastic of course.

And if there was a sticker, how presumptuous of you, to put something through my door that I did not ask for and then insist that I carry out your instructions.

Goblinchild · 15/01/2011 10:29

Why should I look after someone else's crap because they decide I should? Confused
I don't want it, so I recycle it. If it's special then they should give it to them as wants it.
Not me.

I don't understand the nasty/offended attitude they get when you don't return their catalogue.
Any other complany would expect if they put stuff through your door that you didn't ask for, that there's a chance you'll recycle it if you don't want to buy anything from it.

I can understand why they put them through the door, but they really do have to expect that they might not get it back.

And if you don't buy anything from it (whether you leave it outside for them or not) then there's a chance you're not interested.
They can always put a note through saying "if you'd prefer not to have the catalogues then please ring us and we'll take you off our circulation"

risingstar · 15/01/2011 10:44

i put it straight out next to the front door the second it hits the mat (or i find it ). if its there after the day they say they are coming back i chuck it in the bin.

seriously mad. my friend does avon/betterware/anything going. the difference is that she is intelligent enough to realise that most people do not mind you knocking on their door ONCE and asking if they are interested. if they are, she leaves a catalogue, if they are not she never knocks again. she keeps a round book with this info in.

it just seems so much more efficient. she can take on new areas because she is not wasting her time flogging 50 catalogues a street when only 3 are interested,

HSMM · 15/01/2011 11:00

I just have a small sign stuck on my letterbox, saying 'NO CATALOGUES' and I don't get any.

BlueCollie · 15/01/2011 11:13

I have a sign saying no cold callers or sellers. I still got a catalogue through the door. They aren't getting it back it's gone in the bin! YANBU

YankNCock · 15/01/2011 11:21

YANBU.

I started a thread very much like this a year or so ago.

I got two kleeneze catalogues through my door in the same week once, from different distributers. Kept one in because it was raining then couldn't find it, but put the other one outside.

Distributer turned up banging on the door during dinner (could see us through window) when I had my mom visiting from overseas and a 10 week old baby screaming, and proceeded to interogate DH and moan about this other distributor trying to take over his territory (his was the catalogue we couldn't find). Then reeled off a detailed list of instructions about when we could phone him to return the catalogue (but not between these dates because he was on holiday Hmm).

I think he got the message when I screeched over the crying baby 'I DIDN'T ASK YOU TO PUT YOUR STUPID CATALOGUE THROUGH MY DOOR!!!!'

The second distributer never came back to pick up his rain sodden catalogue for a week, so I binned it.

Now I have a sign that says 'No catalogues - YOU WILL NOT GET THEM BACK!' and it has stopped them! Grin

alicet · 15/01/2011 11:24

YANBU this drives me crazy too.

I understand that giving it back saves them money but they need to get the fact that they are unsolicited cold callers and we don't owe them anything!

Like others on here I don't want to keep hold of someone elses crap and remember when to put it back out. I have enough to remember with 2 small children and a busy job thanks! I also don't want a soggy magazine sitting on my doorstep in the rain and then blowing around the estate littering. And I don't want a sign on my door saying no catalogues either!

I know this isn't very helpful of me but tough. I don't mind you posting the things or even ringing on the door to ask for them back. Adn if I still have it I will even give it to you but when I haven't got them then take it on the chin and leave without giving me grief!

NinkyNonker · 15/01/2011 12:18

YANBU. Our front step is right on the street so can't even leave it out.

Tinuviel · 15/01/2011 13:35

zukiecat, they don't knock! They just shove it through the letterbox. I can't leave it on the front - we're straight onto the street. I recycle them as well, although as I don't answer the door to cold callers, they don't get the chance to ask for them back!

redandyellowandpinkandgreen · 15/01/2011 14:42

I think YABU it is people trying to earn a living and they have to pay for their own catalogues.

However, I also find it bloody annoying, the only one I want is Avon. I got a Bettaware catalogue once which had someone else's hair clippings in it euuuuuuuuuuuuuch.

activate · 15/01/2011 14:43

put it in the bin

if they call when you're in say you put it in the bin please don't leave another one

activate · 15/01/2011 14:44

I have ZERO PITY for people who work by invading my personal space

cold-caller on the phone
cold-caller on the doorstep
catalogue poster

they can all fuck off as far as I'm concerned

don't care if it's their job - it's the job they have chosen so they have to deal with the fact that they have made me irate by doing their job and they can fuck the fuck off
