AIBU in thinking that this is well... wrong and preying on the most vulnerable of women somehow?

And £50 in exchange for having the implant really isn't a lot, when you get down to it.

best outcome is that the child suffers no ill effectsit is a minority that suffer from the mothers drug use not the norm.

Even if that were true, which I doubt, you are only talking about physical effects of drug using during pregnancy. The phsychological, emotional and developmental harm that can, and usually is, inflicted on very young children born to drug dependent women is massive, because these babies are not usually removed at birth. Chronic drug use almost always brings with it an unstable lifestyle, lack of structure, lack of emotional availability, physical neglect, because the mother/parents are busy locating their next fix and not focussed on the child. With the best will in the world (and there often is) a drug dependent mother cannot give a baby all that it needs to develop peoperly. The damage done to children who experience neglect and emotional abuse, even if they are born physically well, is far reaching and can be devastating.

I hope I don't offend any posters who were born to drug dependent mothers, I'm not trying to make any sweeping statements, but I have seen the effects in young adults and it's devastating.

I agree with this, fab idea.

EarthMotherImNot · 14/01/2011 16:52

Having spent the last 10 months fostering a baby born with heroin, methadone and diazepam in her tiny body and having to withdraw from these drugs, my feelings are very very biased towards protecting the babies born to addicts.

If this deal works and babies won't have to go through the amount of unbearable pain this lo has had to go through, I'm all for it.

Is it these people?

No offence ericnorth you are quite right. Interesting to note that most people who do have first hand knowledge of addicted babies etc or working with the mothers do agree this is a good idea. Another thread a month or two ago I was in a minority agreeing with the charitys ethos . So much so that I will suggest it to my sister. Whose kids have been taken away.
