I have not seen a disaster appeal for the floods in Australia (I dont know if there is one so forgive me if there is)
Are they not worthy?

I've been very moved by the stoicism, bravery and even humour shown by the Australian people on the news coverage of the floods. The floods weren't unexpected, hence the relatively low loss of life/wall-to-wall coverage, but nothing could be done to prevent it. I forget where he was reporting from this morning, but the BBC correspondent pointed out the location where he was didn't even have a river, but 3 months of rain fell in the last two days.

If there was an Australian appeal, I have no doubt the UK would be respond generously, but its if Australia want such aid.

I agreed with one of them above actually. I am not talking bollocks, and i assume you have a social policy phd or some such. Allow me to remain unconvinced.

It was an educated guess. Rather silly to be abusive then take offence because i assume you have a phd.

Really, you have no perspective. But your passion is very worthy. I don't write with sarcasm there.

Abject poverty?

Perspective. Children are housed, educated, have free healthcare, money for food and clothing, food itself at school.

In addition; some familias have subidised childcare, free entertainment activities and clubs, subsidised sports. Housing protections are enshrined in law: social servicio support families. Legal advice is often free: advice on accessing monies and services is free: libraries are a comunista resource.

Perspective.

I work for childrens services. I have recently returned after Mat Leave. The services have been decimated. They are only a few months into the cuts. There will be nothing left. Its more shocking than you could have imagined. I dont mean extras, I mean physios and OTs and SWs and disability services.

There will be nothing left apart from statutory services and they will be pared down to the minimum.

Dont be old, dont be young, dont be disabled, dont fall ill.

Appletrees · 15/01/2011 22:15

It is abject poverty which has disappeared. You do not know what abject poverty is. Using the términos so loosely is distasteful.

You refer mainly to my second list. No one would've describe a lack of library access as abject poverty. You are describing relative poverty, which often is not poverty at all.

Thid is what i meant byeee a failure of understanding.

I approve of welfare provision. I deplore some cuts. I do, how've, have a very clear view of the value and significance of the welfare state. Alongside, of course, its contradictions, paradoxes and failures.

Good to see how generous people are to the Queensland Flood Appeal.

It is amazing to see how everyone is pitching in to help.

epicfail · 16/01/2011 11:50

Oh - that's right, thank you DrFayRay for your post to remind us - this was a thread about donations to the Queensland Flood Appeal. Not about abject poverty or the lack there-of in the UK. Hmm

differentnameforthis · 17/01/2011 00:29

Insurers already trying to get out of paying, because the flood were caused by 'slowly rising river water' and not 'storm waters entering quickly through the roof'

So, insured or not, the people of QLD maybe be fucked anyway!

WILD weather in Queensland has triggered almost 6000 claims for RACQ Insurance. Flooding outside the southeast has chalked up $365 million in claims, the Insurance Council of Australia said. Claimants have been angered by policy wording indicating victims may not be covered for water slowly rising out of a river as opposed to storm water quickly entering through the roof An RACQI spokesman said hydrologists still were to determine how to classify the disasters. Chief executive Bradley Heath said while his organisation "includes flash flood coverage in our standard household policies, RACQ Insurance has never offered flood cover as standard".

foggyfig · 17/01/2011 04:15

Amazing that Australians affected by the floods are not seen as needy by some in the UK. I am sad that a lot of the people that have lost their houses will probably never recover. They will have mortgages that they will have to keep paying, and they will not have a house to show for the money that they have to fork out. A lot will not be covered by insurances because of the wording in their policies.

How come then that Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, who are poorer nations can donate to the Australia in time of need? Both these countries donated to the bushfire appeal.

news.ninemsn.com.au/national/751373/indon-png-donate-to-bushfire-appeal

Indonesia have also committed $1,000,000 dollars to the flood appeal.

I am sure that if the United Kingdom was in the same dire straits that the Australian Govt would not be backward in offering some form of aid to your country.

How many of your fellow countrymen have made their homes in Australia. Are you tossing them out with the floodwaters??

Shame on those of you who are tight-arsed look after yourselves only bigots.

ben5 · 17/01/2011 05:02

most major shops have a donation point , coles and woolworths. just a shame that the floods on the west coast will not benifit in such thesame way as thoses on the east coast of australia
