because clearly you are saying something. usually something pretty nasty. it has an element of bitchiness to it, and kind of feels like you are going to go to the next person you see and slate person 1 until your tongue falls off.

example, a couple of months back I had a disasterous haircut. really really awful. I had my jaw length bob cut into a crop to sort it out. I went round to my dads and DB was there with his GF, who has long blonde hair. and thinks every woman looks better with long blonde hair.

everyone gushed about my new do, and the GF said "Im not saying anything" and left the room.

it made me giggle a bit because it was obvious she didnt like it (and thats not what the thread is about, just an example) but i heard a mum say it today at school re another mum and it frustrated me. I think its up there with "Im not being funny but..."

Did you not kick her in the fluff?

kreecherlivesupstairs · 13/01/2011 10:08

It is generally the 'but' added to the end of the statement. You just know which way it is headed.
My DD uses the phrase 'I'm not saying anything'. I don't know where she picked it up, she is not yet 10.

OracleInaCoracle · 13/01/2011 10:08

oh god, !Im not being racist but.." is awful

and "I dont want to upset you, but..."

Same as "no offence, but" when you usually do get offended

'Don't take this personally but...' followed by a very rude personal comment.

OracleInaCoracle · 13/01/2011 10:17

backhanded compliments. "I really like your glasses, they really take focus away from your chin(s)"

"It was in the last place I looked" - no, no you should carry on looking after you find it...

" You made it then" - no, I am a figment of your imagination

PaisleyLeaf · 13/01/2011 10:19

"I'm not saying anything" can be quite funny sometimes.
It sounds like you were smarting about your hair and when it's something personal like that no it's not funny. She was being rotten.

BaggedandTagged · 13/01/2011 10:24

"To be honest" followed by big fat lie

DreamTeamGirl · 13/01/2011 10:27

When I get asked something there is no way I am answering by some of the more errr... 'upfront' mums at school I always say

'I am saying NOTHING'

OracleInaCoracle · 13/01/2011 10:32

paisley, i really wasnt. I love my new 'do. but yes, she was being horrible. I was just reminded of it earlier. it seems to be a phrase used to say something and something pretty mean at that.

ds asked me today if he could have a new wii game this weekend (he still has christmas cash) I said "we'll see" and he said "I'll take that as a yes".

it was, but we were going to surprise him tomorrow!

EduStuckintheSnow · 13/01/2011 12:06

'I don't mean to be rude...'

No, but you're going to be anyway.

ThisIsANiceCage · 13/01/2011 13:06

"No one's complained."

I am complaining. Right here, in front of you now.
