to think that Nigella doesn't taste half the horrible food in her cookbooks?

Bless her, I love her an all but some of her food is rank.

I tried those gnocchi roast potatoes and they were inedible - spongy and foamy tasting as well as rock hard on the outside.

Marmite pasta - well bloody hell it tasted like the devil's own excreta. Anne del Conte my arse.

DD made the sweet and sour from Kitchen - vile.

I think she has lost it slightly. Compared to How to Eat (food in the real world) I don't think her latest recipes come up to scratch at all.

I do love the way she writes but I think her recipes are so hit and miss it is not worth attempting any more.

Yes yes - it's not like you are using the powdered stuff - a big bottle of coke is enough to cook a gammon in.

Hulababy · 11/01/2011 15:12

Have the new book but not tried it yet. Have a few of her older books like feast and everything I have tried in them have worked very well and tasted lovely.

Mind I wouldn't cook marmite pasta anyway as I had marmite!

Will chose something to cook from it next week and report back.

silverfrog · 11/01/2011 15:13

it's only 2l of coke - better than cleaning toilets with it Grin
have only tried the cherry coke one (was trying to get a rise out of my uncle, and though, in for a penny, in for a pound Grin), but it was pronounced bloody lovely by all.

wuggglemump · 11/01/2011 15:13

I do a smartie cookie recipe that came from a pull out in Good Food magazine and they are divine and chewy. I've made them into cookie pops successfully too.

I think I'll try the choc chip ones this weekend though. I like to bake on Saturdays.

I've a lemon meringue cupcake recipe that I'm dying to try too.

DilysPrice · 11/01/2011 15:14

Whenever I suggest cooking anything from her books DH reminds me of her recommendation to sprinkle some cumin over a cauliflower and bake it in the oven. It was the vilest thing ever, and as a result he refuses to cook anything of hers (except Han in coke, natch).
I have almost all the books though, and use them for baking and cooking for DCs.

LOL at crossword tattoo thread. i swear the horror took that long to sink in. (i do love on mn when you kinda skim then your brain percolates 'name... crossword... tattoo' to the surface for you.

AbsofCroissant · 11/01/2011 15:15

Name names Aitch ...

I really should start using recipe books more, so that we end up eating something more varied that at the mo. Though I did do something vaguely creative involving cod and pine nuts on Sunday.

AitchTwoOh · 11/01/2011 15:17

well, it wasn't her. ]wink]

NigellaPleaseComeDineWithMe · 11/01/2011 15:18
Wink
Hulababy · 11/01/2011 15:18

Aitch - I use the stock from the ham in coke to cook red cabbage in. Very very good.

I tweak all recipes pretty much from all cookbooks, unless attempting baking. I think that is the key with recipes, tweak to suit your palette esp in terms of spice and seasoning.

I have tweaked her chillirecipe from nigella express and now have it spot on for us here. It is dh's fave chilli recipe ever, even better than eating it out.

AitchTwoOh · 11/01/2011 15:20

i hear ya on the red cabbage front, but will decline nonetheless. red cabbage plus apple for me, plus ham in mustard and honey PLUS lentil soup to die for... yes please.

and don't forget, nigella actually suggests making bean soup with it. vileamundo.

ShirleyKnot · 11/01/2011 15:20

That crossword thread wasd just awesome. I think I suggested "Tattoo" as a name. It fit really well - and then a load of people came on and started calling people snobs and how awful for the new baby if when he grew up he wasn't on the tattoo.

GetOrfMoiLand · 11/01/2011 15:21

Yes I love her suggestion for roast potatoes.

Cut into wedges (see fig. 1)

And the semolina is a cracking idea.

lol. yeah youse are aw puir snobs so yis are.

NigellaPleaseComeDineWithMe · 11/01/2011 15:23

Black bean soup - my DS' love that.

AbsofCroissant · 11/01/2011 15:23

But I do wish I'd been on Aitch's Ghetto Chicken thread. Then I could have used "get your head out of your ass"

I don't get to use it that often Sad

GetOrfMoiLand · 11/01/2011 15:24

oh GOD please can someone link to the corssword thread (I cannot do searches, am a bit fick).

yes Aitch name names please. I have to know who thought venetian ghetto recipes would be unsitable to serve to black people so I can note on my spreadhseet and curl my lip whenever I see their name Grin

I think one line was actually "Daddy, why aren't I on your special tattoo like all my brothers and sisters"

I pissed.

DuplicitousBitch · 11/01/2011 15:24

even on the telly her kitchen recipies looked ropey. her christmas book is fabulous, worth it for the lamb in pomegrante juice alone.

AbsofCroissant · 11/01/2011 15:26

Here you go GOML

It started off as a fairly normal "weirdy made up name" thread, and then a bit further in she reveals her true reasoning.

ShirleyKnot · 11/01/2011 15:27

Oh Shit. I remember now, I bloody love YunoYurbubson and all.

AitchTwoOh · 11/01/2011 15:27

the irritating thing was that the poster concerned was looking for a meal that would be easy to serve, make people happy, not contain anything too unusual and not require much slaving in the kitchen. (she may not have used word slaving, being sensitive to such issues).

all i did was say 'oh you should try this, it's great'. cue pillory.

oh it DOES feel good to get that off my chest. it's been about two years, lol, and i sweat about it every time i cook that dinner now. (dh calls it 'racist chicken' now, which is not particularly helpful).

GetOrfMoiLand · 11/01/2011 15:27

Thanks Abs
