To hate living in Manchester (and North in general)

Moved here four years ago to be with DH, and I still cannot get used to it. We are in a nicest area of Manchester, and it is still feels very provincial and boring. I dream about living in London, but DH does not want to look for a new job. I feel like there is no point and don?t want to decorate the house, make friends, etc, I just fantasise about being in London every single day. There is not much to do here, no nice streets or galleries, not much to do on the weekends as a family. I went to London this weekend, it was so painful to come back. Does anybody else feel this way?

knackered I lived in Hulme for a while and I'm here to defend it! But I did grow up in Wythenshawe.

HappyFlappy · 08/02/2017 16:59

Here - if you lived in Redcar, THEN you'd have something to moan about!

It's bloody DEAD!

AndNowItsSeven · 08/02/2017 17:00

Good op, the North thanks you for the move.

ImnotPadget · 08/02/2017 17:00

I remember this thread from the first time round!

Dont worry about us Hulme folk everyone, plenty to do!

I live in Kensington and would LOVE to move back up north. Shitty overcrowded transport, it often takes an hour just to get out of Kensington, shitty school prospects unless i spend a fortune on fees, stupid money to move from a flat to a house... no thanks, I'd much rather cash in my chips and buy something lovely in a smaller and more friendly city! This time next year, eh, rodders

ILikeyourHairyHands · 08/02/2017 17:11

'Humbled by the Manchester experience'

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah etc.

I remember your thread originally OP, please feel free to spread the word amongst your like-minded friends how grim the north is and they should, under no circumstances, venture there.

We should pay you for your service really.

coldcanary · 08/02/2017 17:16

Christ I just found me under a different name back there! Telling you to sod off back down south actually..
If the 'ordeal' of living in Hale made you feel humble then God help you if you ever come across actual poverty. If you have to be thankful about anything just be bloody grateful that you can afford to relocate to another expensive part of the country just because you didn't like where you were.

MissJSays · 08/02/2017 17:19

It doesn't sound much like you've put any effort into it OP! Hale is a lovely area, but you can't compare it to the centre of London!
There is so much to do in Manchester. I'm South Manchester too, I grew up here so know no different. I always think how lucky I am to have been born and raised in such an exciting place.

What is it exactly you want?
Sorry if already answered, haven't had time to read the entire thread.

EurusHolmesViolin · 08/02/2017 17:19

Why don't you then goesdown? This time next year you could be back home!

HappyFlappy · 08/02/2017 17:23

We moved back to London in 2013. I think "Manchester experience" made me more humble and appreciative and now I count my blessings and never take things for granted anymore.

Patronising?

Toi?

Msqueen33 · 08/02/2017 17:24

I live and grew up down south not far from London. I love the north and if I didn't have my parents here who help with out kids (both with Sen) I'd move there. Some people are too southern.

ilovesooty · 08/02/2017 17:25

I doubt if the OP would recognise humility or appreciation if they bit her on the arse.

AnotherUsedName13 · 08/02/2017 17:26

There's loads to do in Manchester!

Go to a museum - there are at least four I can think of off the top of my head.
Go to the theatre - the Moscow State Circus is in town.
Go to one of the gorgeous parks.
Go out for a nice meal - there are some great places, esp in Chinatown which is frankly better than the London Chinatown. The dim sum is to die for.
Go out into the country - it's not an hour long grind just to clear the M25 anymore.

I've lived in London and I've lived in the North and if you genuinely can't find a thing up here and can't get past how it's not London, I don't think the issue is Manchester.

MissJSays · 08/02/2017 17:26

Oh goodness meBlushobviously ignore! Glad you found happiness back in London, OP! X

ILikeMilk · 08/02/2017 17:27

I mean my own experience in Manchester! Being trapped in a place I grew to hate so much. I realise it is very subjective. Now that we had moved I don't hate it anymore :)

Oh god, this is a zombie thread with an update.

OP - I'm glad you're back in London and happier now, but holy crap, 'humbled by the Manchester experience'!

This is why Londoners have a bad rep!

Composteleana · 08/02/2017 17:28

Hale is a shithole???? HALE???!!!! You want to try some of the places i've lived love, some of them in London too. Bloody gorgeous countryside on your doorstep, lovely country pubs out in Cheshire, fancy WAG salons and wine bars if that's your kind of thing, Manchester centre half an hour away with it's film festivals, international food festivals, museums, restaurants, myriad choice of bars and clubs. Less than an hour to the coast.

Anyway, see the whole thing is moot as you've moved back, best of luck to you and all that.

c3pu · 08/02/2017 17:30

It's grim up North Grin

EurusHolmesViolin · 08/02/2017 17:34

I will say, I've never been especially keen on Hale myself...

GoesDownLikeACupOfColdSick · 08/02/2017 17:36

Eurus - work/maternity rights stuff, basically! I loved living in London when I was single (just as I loved Manchester when I was single) but it's just not a patch on the north for kids IMO. Poor DD probably has a smoker's lungs just from walking down the street!

EurusHolmesViolin · 08/02/2017 18:04

Ah fair enough. Perhaps a goal for a couple of years time then.

GoesDownLikeACupOfColdSick · 08/02/2017 18:18

That's the plan :) :)

scootinFun · 08/02/2017 19:21

I live near Manchestet and think it had its own charm. It's no London but try and celebrate its differences. Alternatively you could leave your husband I suppose. It's also a great starting point for exploring 'oop north' try going for walks in Kinder Scout, visit Buxton, Bakewell and all the wee little towns in the area- you might surprise yourself with what's out there.

SheDoneAlreadyDoneHadHerses · 08/02/2017 19:30

I live North of Manc (Slatterys high five for MrsChemist) and there's LOADS to do. LOADS.

I'm 25mins from town and I'm close to Burrs Country Park, Heaton Park, Edgworth Reservoirs, Smithills Farm, to name but a close few. Then hop a tram and I'm in the centre of town, 20mins on a train and we're in Alderley Edge, on to Tatton Park, or Mobberley (good walking and one of the best pubs in the UK).
Staying up this neck of the woods, and Ramsbottom has 4 of the best eateries in the NW.

I mean, you need to try and expand your horizons whilst you're stuck here.
