or dodgy in selling these books?

I get sent books for free by large publishers, for recommending to students, reading lists, and for my own personal enjoyment (!).

The topics aren't something I work on and so I don't use them, and the course is now finished. They also go out-of-date every year.

AIBU - or dishonest somehow? - in selling these on through Amazon (I am broke...)? Or is it simply my good fortune to have these which I can sell?

Confused

Why is that dishonest or unreasonable? They are yours - given as a gift. It's up to you what you do with them surely?

YANBU. Look on it as a public service. I imagine you won't be charging the same as the publisher. You are being altruistic if you ask me Wink

Ladymuck · 11/01/2011 11:43

What else are you meant to do with them? Personally they would be straight onto Amazon.

DewinDoeth · 11/01/2011 11:44

Oh, good! I was sort of looking on it as a bonus (tragically not a banker-style one Grin) but then had a sudden attack of the guilts.

I need to get over it! Grin (Kreecher in fact I feel morally superior now, following your post! Grin)

Xposted Ladymuck - yeah, maybe next time I won't wait as long and sell them still IN DATE!!

It depends. I sometimes get sent books by publishers to review - often these are proof copies and it states in small print they cannot be sold . I usually try to give them away to friends as it seems wrong to throw them in the recycling.

If there is no embargo on your books DewinDoeth you are quite at liberty to sell them.

A story did the rounds of someone being disciplined by their dept for this. Can you donate them to the uni/college library or give them to PhD students/colleagues? I guess the downside is that publishers become irate and use it as a reason to restrict sending out inspection copies.

I appreciate that many depts may not be bothered and perhaps the story was entirely apocryphal ...
