following on from tax credits and working mums thread

following on from previous threads, i was wondering why the govt don't have the option of giving stay at home parents the childcare tax credit they would get if they were working? why can't the government pay for people to look after their own children? im probably being very simple, but im sure many out there would much prefer to not work and, without wanting to start a sahm v working mum argument, its good for the children to have a parent there at home. expense obviously would be an issue but those who would have received childcare tax credit wouldn't be earning bucket loads and paying lots in tax, there would be a shortfall between the tax credit the govt pays and how much tax the person would pay from their employment.

i await being told im being stupid but i think it would be a good idea to help people stay home with their children, even if it was just up to they were school age. there should be a lot more help for parents who want to stay at home and the govt are always spouting shite about how the family is the core unit of society and how they look after families.

I trained for years to get into my profession too. hence if I ever manage to have a child (PCOS grrr!) I'd be reluctant to abandon it given the time and effort it took to get there.

I have a large number of working mum's as colleagues too. They make it work, they're happy.

But of course, it's not possible for everyone to make it work. Child care costs can outstrip wages, etc, etc.

No, I agree - you make your choices based on what you think you can afford etc - wasn't trying to be controversial at all.
I have friends who can afford to do my job and take time out - I can't - we had our son stupidly young and are catching up!
WE can't afford a massive career break - maybe others can! Grin

Secondary.

I've even tried sleeping with the idiot and I still don't seem to get pregnant so maybe it's academic anyway - the damage is done with our son! Wink

YABU.

Lots of working parents are great. Lots of working parents are shit. Lots of SAHPs are great. Lots of SAHPs are shit. Whether a child has a SAHP or working parents is neutral to that child's welfare.

What is clear is that people in economic employment benefit everybody through their taxes and the services they provide to society. It is a no-brainer that the tax system should encourage people to get back to work, not to stay at home.

I will however support cheaper and quality childcare to enable more parents to get back to work.
