It's so refreshing to see Holly Willoby on tv with all her curves. I know she is expecting right now but it's so nice to see a real women for a change. Long may it continue!!

OP posts:
mutznutz · 10/01/2011 12:12

I'm a size 8. I wondered how long it would take before someone used the word 'stick'...only eight posts in. Must be a record Hmm

ILovedYou · 10/01/2011 12:16

A real woman is a woman ...

compo · 10/01/2011 12:18

She's pregnant isn't she?

gingernutlover · 10/01/2011 12:19

i hate all this "real woman" stuff, like previous posters have said we are all REAL women FGS

I did think Holly looked stunning though, wish I could look like that in a dress!

TrillianAstra · 10/01/2011 12:24

Brecon - I think a big part of a presenting job is to be pleasant to look at as well as able to read an autocue and walk around and gesture at the right things. If you are just a "presenter", saying what you are told to say then of course the producers will pick the person who looks the nicest and has the nicest voice to listen to.

The importance of how you look (in theory at least) goes down in relation to how much of what you get to say is you saying it (and therefore having an opinion and a personality (and even doing work.research before you say it) rather than just saying what you are told to say.

theevildead2 · 10/01/2011 12:24

Also while some women are naturally quite thin (and I think you can usually tell, they don't look ill) after a certain age most aren't.

With many female presenters and actresses (think of the desperate house wives cast) they are not naturally that thin. They are being forced to conform to what is unhealthy for them. Look at all of these women when they started out in their 20's and they were probably at least a dress size more than in their 40's that isn't natural for most people.

silverfrog · 10/01/2011 12:24

I think the "real woman" commnet is meant to mean "someone who is not conforming ot a stereotype, and is the weight they are meant to be, wihtout ridiculous over-dieting or platic surgery"

It is NOT meant ot mean (they way I see it) any particular size, whether large or tiny.

so, it is refreshing to see Holly Whatshername on tv, because (when she isn't pregnant) whilst she may clearly work out, and put some effort into looking good, she doesn't seem to go in for crash dieting, lots of "I was 3 stone under my pre-regnancy weight only 2 hours after I gave birth" type nonsense.

I find it depressing that most of the female presenters on tv would not be the perfect size 8 they are if they were not working on tv... the pressure to conform (and the very fact that tv bosses think that all we want ot se is half starved women!) is ridiculous.

apart form that, I couldn't care less what size presenters are, as long as they are a healthy weight for them

Laquitar · 10/01/2011 12:24

But tbh i find the media's constant mention about Nigella's and Holly's curves irritating. If anything it gives the message that curves are sooo unusual.

I don't like it when they criticise curves but then again i don't see the point of praising curves either. It still gives emphasis and focus on the woman's body rather than talent.

theevildead2 · 10/01/2011 12:26

Trillian there are so many fugly male presenters and news readers that I can't agree with that. The guy that presents Dragon's Den.. if he were female I don't care what credentials he has he would not be on telly

darleneconnor · 10/01/2011 12:29

She is still a lot slimmer than the average British woman.

Calling her 'curvy' (the usual code for 'fat') is a bit deluded.

TrillianAstra · 10/01/2011 12:30

I'm not saying it necessarily does work that way, but that it should.

TrillianAstra · 10/01/2011 12:31

She actually is curvey darlene - not fat. If curvy is a code word for fat it is a crap one because when people are properly fat they generally don't look curvy.

Summerbird73 · 10/01/2011 12:33

Holly Willoughby? Oh yes that real woman who had a tummy tuck after giving birth to her first child Hmm

nickschick · 10/01/2011 12:34

Ermmmm Holly's predeccesor was ...Fern.

Holly is pregnant not curvy .....

I think most women are beautiful regardless of their size or age, nothing beats the natural self confidence of a woman comfortable in her skin.

I was with 3 of my friends ......w a size 22 said she would be happy if she could be a size 14-16 like me I said I would love to be a size 10 like d,d then said she wished she could be a size 8 like A .......A a beautiful girl then said .....Id be ok if I had better teeth .....we cant be happy can we?

nickschick · 10/01/2011 12:35

summer ...did she have a tummy tuck? Envy the air in her head wont alter the scales though will it

i doubt she did have a tummy tuck as isnt it the case that after having one you arent meant to have any more pregnancies? she doesnt seem the type surely if she doesnt mind being bigger than the average presenter and dresses nicely to accomodate and flatter that then a bit of a mummy tummy surely wouldnt bother her? she seems nice and girl next doorish not the sort who would have a t tuck?

mutznutz · 10/01/2011 12:51

According to Google all she said was she might 'consider having something done in the future'...meaning plastic surgery. She didn't mention tummy tuck...for all we know she might have meant Botox or something.

meantosay · 10/01/2011 12:52

Well yes, she has curves like 'real' women. But she is also incredibly good looking, unlike the majority of 'real' women. I don't think we can really claim to have real women on telly until there are lots of very average looking but talented presenters etc.

BuzzLightBeer · 10/01/2011 12:55

we are all real women, fat and thin and stupid and intelligent and black and white and so on. None of us are pretend women. What a misogynistic turn of phrase! You're not real you're too pretty, you're not real you're too thin.
Of course we need more variation of the female form on tv, thats not in question. But we don't need even more of women judging women.

I think the OP meant it's great to see a more realistic representative of women on telly. Yes, some people are very pretty or very thin but they tend to be over represented on telly.

meantosay · 10/01/2011 13:00

Sorry, was replying to Buzz.

roseability · 10/01/2011 13:00

women should not be defined by their dress size full stop. This sort of bullshit just peddles the wrong values

Some women are naturally thin, others are bigger. Can you tell me something interesting? Have you touched people's lives with love and humanity? Tell me about yourself. A number does not define you
