I'm surprised some people get so wound up about what babies are wearing.

I dress mine in stuff that's comfy, and don't really think about what she looks like to other people.

Aren't there babygros for adults now? I haven't seen them myself, but if that's true it'd definately be worse than dressing a baby in jeans and ugg boots wouldn't it?

I think a point and laugh campaign should be started to stamp the practice out.

agentzigzag, yes you're right. My eldest teenager has one of those fleecy babygros.I wanted one (i know the shame ha ha but they look so cosy and warm) but my daughter said she would disown me.....ha ha

it's all about personal taste though really, i have 2 dds and ds, and i HATE, HATE, HATE baby pink/blue-really can't stress it enough Grin. i do like woolly clothes, but really only in funky kinda colours, luckily my mum knits, and i'm learning.
i think jeggings are totally naff on everyone, but i don't mind leggings in bright colours/patterns. also like skinny jeans on dd1 (3.5) & dd2 (22mo), as long as not with adult type tops IYSWIM, i put them with smocky tops and dresses that are too short, and you can tuck them easily into welly/snowboots, so quite pratical imo.
i don't mind a bit of sparkle, but think that dresses or tops with thin straps for anyone under the age of about 10 is just horrid, sorry!
also hate anything with a visable brand, esp. for young children. and the worst offender of all is anythin with 'daddy's little...', 'mummy's little...' 'my mummy/ daddy, granny, milkman love me' yuck yuck yuck. but actually quite like ds (5mo) in his wee beatles t'shirt.
reading through this i hadn't realised i was quite so opinionated about my kids clothes, i seem to have more rules for them than i do for me [embarrassed].

I have to disagree about the baby jeans, DS2 was bought a few pairs of jeans from family members for Christmas and they all have lovely soft fleecy linings and i'm sure he'll be very comfy when they fit him in a couple of months. They certainly don't seem stiff or too grown up at all.

Also, I have to say that I have never found a problem with buying plain, comfortable clothes for either DS1 (2.9) and DS2 (2 months). Most of the supermarkets have nice basic stuff alongside the mini-me adult imitation stuff.

dotty - pretty much agree with all those. also kind of see your point about narrow jeans and wellies/boot etc. maybe that is a bit easier

Lol at baby gangster Sungirltan Grin you are not being unreasonable op imo anyways. But I'm very easy going when it comes to clothes my main things is they should be comfy and for little babies clicky buttons or whatever on the front! It used to almost kill me to get ds1 into the million lovely babygro he had that were pull over the head couple of clicky buttons on the back of the neck! I did have quite a few lovely "proper" baby things I was sent as presents from Algeria and they did not look like pajamas they were the proper sweet soft as could be types (brudyness bubbles...)

It's just different strokes for different folks. Personally, I wouldn't have dressed my DC's in babygros until they were a year old because they're boring! I just used them as pyjamas really. But each to their own...

In that case, I think an exception should be made for you mincenmash and you're under an obligation to get one Grin

What's the point of having teenagers if not to embarrass them??

I'm looking forward to that part of my job with probably a tad too much relish.

yes I hate hate all the pink tarty disney stuff, or daddy girl, go to boden and pumpkin patch sales

the other tihng that cheeses me off is the price of tights £3-5 a pair you can get adult opaque tights in funky colours for that price... they are never in sale except the white and pale pink ones, which get so grubby with crawling in like 2 minutes

my mother knits so have some stiff in purple green and red and orange

like kids to look like kids I don't even like the black denim uniform for adults either but that's just me

Talking about the price of clothes, I went to our local independant shoe shop to price up how much it'd be to shod 1 YO DD2, and apart from the tosser who owns the shop saying to another customer 'Well, you know what pushchairs are like' when he made her wait for me to move DD2, I was a bit Shock at a pair of little boots costing £40!

She's size 4.5, they didn't have gold leaf on them or anything, and the assistant didn't say they'd been handmade by the elves they keep in the back.

What's that all about then?

Goodness me I must dress my children in a very tacky manner according to you lot - they spend their lives in leggings/jeggings and smock tops which are very practical and comfortable.......

DD 2 (20 mths) also has some furry boots from Next which didn't cost the earth and have served her very well during the arctic temperatures of the last two weeks.......each to their own i say.........

I agree with the op. Personally I don't care what other people dress their children in or what they look like, what I do care about however is what mine look like.

It is frustrating that I can buy affordable clothes in the supermarkets, matalan etc for ds8, but if I was to dress dd5 from the same shops she would look like some kind of streetwalker!

Another vote for pumpkin patch ( Boden is a rip off IMO)

DD is 5 months old now, and babygros struggle on her long frame, but she lives in them, lovely soft jersey leggings, long sleeve body suits/t-shirts etc, dungarees. I tried her in a pair of jeans once and she looked so uncomfortable bless her. I tend to buy her stuff in Baby Gap (sale stuff good prices), Boden (ebay), babygros from Next (white ones from supermarkets). She absolutely looks her age, if I had my way I'd dress her until she leaves home!

I was looking at a giant babygro. It looked so comfy and warm. My mum said I would look like George Dawes in it :o

I have never had any problems finding comfy, age appropriate clothes for DD. I also have only very rarely seen a child dressed in a way that made me Shock

But I do hate Disney pink and too many pastels. She wears a lot of funky bright colours with navy, burgundy, purple etc.

I have a problem with denim jeans for babies because why does a baby need hard-wearing fabric - it's not like they will be going off to work as mini garage mechanics!

DD (8 months) wears a lot of leggings and t-shirts from Baby Gap and I'm very lucky as my mum sews and knits lovely baby clothes.

I never had a problem before about 6 or 7yo. At which point girls go into older girls' clothes and then the fun begins! While they are babies I found plenty of soft dresses and trousers which were fine. I also don't mind denim as long as it is soft. If anyone can suggest where to get over 7 clothes that are decent I would be grateful.

A wee bit off topic but I saw a romper suit the other day with "granny magnet" on it. Is it just me and my filthy mind but isn't it completely inappropriate?!

OP is not being unreasonable for wanting to buy something perfectly reasonable but finding its not in the shops - which is the main jist of her OP.

This topic always brings out the judge and jury though doesn't it.

Just to say, dress your child in what you want. It wont be more intelligent, happier, better looking, healthier, and it probably wont even be that more or less comfortable, unless you are putting it in its car seat in a whale boned corset.

If you dare to buy a tunic and jeggings set from Tesco or Matalan you wont get fired from being middle-class, dont worry.

If you put your child in petit bateau until they are 11, they still might not get into Cambridge.

Just do what you want and concentrate on your parenting.

The Scandinvians make grea kids and babies clothes...I am always looking out for soft cothes for my DD aged 2...I love rompr suits and dungarees...but once they are toddlers they only make dungarees for boys...I have bought DD some with a train on because she likes trains...but I woudn't mind some with a birdie on or something too!

ANnoys the hell out of me when I see little people n tight jeans. Tight jeans are meant to be sexy...figure hugging...toddlers don't have a figure!

Granny magnet - does that mean a younger bloke who prefers the older lady? Or is it a play on 'fanny magnet'?

It's nice in the way it suggests grannies won't be able to stop themselves mauling cuddling the DC though.

I'm sure a lovely MIL somewhere will buy it as a fab present for their GC, I'll watch out for the thread Grin
