Received an e-mail today from 'Student Loan Company' requesting bank details. Failure to do so might make student loan payment late.

THIS IS A SCAM. Loans are due in this week/next week and I am worried some students might fill in their bank details etc and get scammed.

Have put this in AIBU as I no there is a lot of traffic here. Please pass this message on to people with uni students.

Thanks.

E-mail looked very professional.

Loans were paid on the 4th January. Will contact son and advise not to pass over bank details. Thank you.

Thanks.

I will only be getting a grant from that company as I'm doing an OU degree which is fully funded, but yes that kind of thing can be very plausible!

Thanks - have passed this on to my student DD, asking her to warn her friends too.

Yes Have a happy me too, and their grants were paid in October, at the begiining of the aceamic year. Not sure about those doing a FEB start date?

dd has just told me student loans have an 'extra secure' button, when you first apply, .....so that emails from them don't have 'student loan company' as sender....

no, I don't understand either!
but apparently it protects you from this sort of thing

(careful now!)

Schnullerbacke · 09/01/2011 17:11

We were apparently due a refund from Inland Revenue. Email was very good but obviously they would never ask for your card details plust the security number at the back. I guess they are also targetting people before end of Jan deadline...

lollipopshoes · 09/01/2011 17:12

no reputable firm, be it bank or loan company will ever ask for your bank details by email.

They are always scams.

Tis good to know of specific ones though.
