To be gutted at the DVD of comedian Stu Francis?

So sat with DH looking forward to watching Stu Francis, I think he's very funny and inoffensive.

So it was joke a minute for about half an hour and then bombshell: He told a joke about rape victims, something about rapists not being able to take no for an answer (He's a one liner comedian and so brilliant word play) and so I thought well the word play is funny, but content was a bit off. Then he told a joke about rape victims, along the lines of if they don't think it's funny, fuck 'em. Now I'm uncomfortable. Still watching. Then he says 'I was in an elevator with a spastic.....ooops sorry I know that's the wrong word, lift'

I'm still stupidly thinking perhaps this is more about the language, benefit of the doubt.

And then (sorry) he repeatedly says 'retard' and proceeds to talk like someone with severe special needs. At this point I thought that he was definitely a stupid twat.

AIBU to think that there are endless things that are funny in this world and we do not have to laugh at rape victims or people with special needs or disability?

Sorry if this topic has been done to death, but I was so shocked by another comedian taking cheap shots that I had to raise this.

Can anyone name a genuinely funny and inoffensive comedian?

Ugh how crass. I'd take the DVD back to the shop for a refund. He doesn't deserve your money

MargaretGraceBondfield · 08/01/2011 10:19

I hadn't even thought of that. Bought it from amazon, may just give it a review.

The ones that people really find funny do end up being the ones who ar eless offensive. there is hope

There are some proper idiots out there in my opinon. I've worked on comedy teams with BBC Radio 4...and the rule of thumb was that if the audience did a hushed "oooh" kind of noise..sharply drawn in breath... then it's a bad joke. Laughter is laughter. Laughing at rape victms and people with disabilities just isn't funny.

People like Julia Davies who wrote and starred in Nighty Night had it perfectly...she had a scene with an MS sufferer in a wheelchair...the lead character Jill, hated this woman and accidentally-on-pupose let go of her wheelchair at the top of a hill...that was funny...we were laughing at Jill and her wickedness not at the woman with MS because she was disabled and was plummeting down a hill.

I also had the pleasure of Ricky Gervais who used the word mong and then used another 10 minutes of his act to justify using the word which no longer means mongoloid/someone with Downs. I just sat there thinking 'just don't use the word' if it needs a huge justification. It's pretty simple isn't it, words are not just about intent.

I cannot stand Ricky Gervais. I still don't understand what's funny about him. He makes my teeth itch. You can add Jimmy Carr and Frankie Boyle to that pile too.

MargaretGraceBondfield · 08/01/2011 11:28

I used to really really like RG, loved the office and extras, but his consistent aren't I brilliant act was rather wearing. And it ceased to be funny and just believable.

I really think the comedy tide is changing and this current crop of 'shock' comedians will have had their day.

We went to see Stewart Francis live. He told all those jokes and I was upset (I have a DD with CP so especially hurtful Sad). Such a shame because most of it was funny. Spoiled the evening for me.

MargaretGraceBondfield · 08/01/2011 11:59

Stewart Francis Blush excuse my spelling!!

I just had him pinned as a funny wordsmith and had no idea that he was going to be offensive.

Just noticed the DVD is a 15Shock.
