Ok, so I know I was being unreasonable having a quiet cup of raw sewage coffee in this quality establishment, however, I was served by a lady who literally snotted and spluttered her way through my transaction.

So shocked by her demeanor was I that I continued to study her flu like antics as I sipped. She wiped her nose repeatedly with her hand, took money, gave change and handed over the coffee cups etc and all the while, not a drop of Anti Bac gel passed her hands.

Utterly minging. She should have stayed at home or been sent home. I don't think its cricket at all.

I'm sure it won't come to that, Narketta. Let us know how he gets on.

Narketta · 07/01/2011 19:25

I really hope not bupcakes, I've got everything crossed.

bupcakesandcunting · 07/01/2011 19:33

I'll keep everything crossed for you too. :) FWIW his boss sounds like a right bastard who could do with getting laid.

Narketta - please tell your DH to go above her in this matter - it really sounds like she's got it in for him, and that's bullying, which can and should be dealt with.
Please don't let her get away with this. :(

all companies should have a written sickness policy, and yes you can be diciplined/given a warning for recurrent sickness as long as it's not preganancy related AFAIK.

Most places have a stage process, ours is 3 absences or 2 absences of more than 7 days in any rolling 6 months for a stage 1 "warning" ie line manager has a chat about the reasons for sickness/assesses if it's genuine or not. Then it's normally agreed that the person will have no more absenses for a fixed 6/12 week period

If they are sick, they go to stage 2 (at managers discretion/within reason) and have to have a Dr's cert for any absense (i.e. they can't self cert) and the co. writes to their GP and will reimburse the fees for the cert.

If this is broached, or if someone is long term sick (weeks and weeks) it will go to stage 3, which is a visit from HR if their off and a final warning/assment to see if they should be sacked on the basis that they're unfit to do the role.

You can be sacked for sickness as long as you are not diabled or pregnant, and much as most of us don't take the piss lots of people do, and businesses have to protect themselves from people who abuse the system, especially if they pay full sick pay.

Where I work, the highest rate of sickness is the Sat between good friday and the bank holiday monday at easter, no coincidence there Hmm

I agree that supermarkets are a bit rubbish and don't look after their staff well, and that really the store manager could have redeployed the woman elsewhere

Also, Narketta, you don't have to be in a union to get ACAS involved, I would speak to them now and see what they can do.
Also, whilst your DH is not in the union he will be entitled to have someone accompany him to the diciplinary, so get him to take a friend or go with him yourself if you can, it then means he has a witness to any unreasonable behaviour from his manager
I also agree that he should go above her

and bupcakes she needs to get laid??? WTF??? what kind of attitude is that, she's grumpy and unreasonable and would therefore suddenly become sweetness and light if she got some cock in her?! Seriously

bupcakesandcunting · 09/01/2011 19:51

Oh, settle down MrsMooo. It was just a humourous, throwaway comment. Nowt serious in it.
