Ongoing story. Live in a block of flats. Management company sort out cleaning etc (for a large service charge).

There is a daily list of jobs to be done which is signed for. On the list is sweep garage (garage is underfloor secure garage).

Lots of leaves on the floor of the garage.

Asked management company why garage was not swept because of all the leaves.

Management answer : leaves are not litter. Also daily sweep does not mean sweep, it means picking up litter (there is never any litter to pick up as the bins are in the garage and the occupiers put their rubbish in the bins).

So AIBU to expect daily sweeping of garage to really mean sweeping and not just picking up the odd bit of rubbish?

I would expect that 'daily sweep' means to actually sweep but obviously to them it's just a quick whip round daily

I can understand his point about leaves though as the councils round here do not class leaves as rubbish. We are not allowed to put leaves in our bins we have to take them to the tip as with don't have a compost heap. They could at least sweep them up and get the council or someone out to deal with them especially if you are paying a service charge

Bumping this as I am meeting one of the directors of the management company on Weds so need to know if I am being unreasonable. Please, please ladies help me.

(Have loads of other issues with things like window cleaning etc, but thats another story).

It may not be in the current definition of 'daily sweep' but it doesn't sound unreasonable to ask for them to be included. Any chance these leaves could become slippery? Health and safety matter?

agedknees · 07/01/2011 15:55

Chil - thanks for that. Have visions of 10 years time no garage space, just a garage full of leaves.

If as part of your service charge you pay for the floor to be swept, the floor should be swept. It's that simple.

agedknees · 07/01/2011 15:57

Curly - thanks. Management company twists and turns every time we make a comment.

I agree that leaves aren´t litter tbh.

But, that doesn´t mean that they shouldn´t be getting swept up & composted imo.

Is the garage open somehow that leaves keep blowing in?

agedknees · 07/01/2011 16:03

garage door opens and shuts by remote control. Leaves are brought in by cars, but are just left in the garage where they fall.

Will suggest a green compost bin when I meet with the director.

But if you have a list of 'services', and one of the services on there is that the floor be swept, the floor should be swept surely, regardless of what actually needs to be swept.

If the list says 'litter picking' then the people who pay the service charge are paying for litter picking, not sweeping.

Seems to me they either need to change the service they offer, or get the brush out!

GrimmaTheNome · 07/01/2011 16:08

I don't think leaves are rubbish but they are certainly litter

Be careful, they may decide that by 'litter removal' they just mean stray batches of kittens or puppies. Hmm

Of course 'sweep' means 'sweep'. They are Trying It On.

FlamingoBingo · 07/01/2011 16:08

YANBU. I think they're a bit pants too - vastly overrated IMO!

Ormirian · 07/01/2011 16:11

leaves arent litter when they are on the floor in the park or the garden.. but they are litter when they are in a garage or a hallway I would have thought..

Figgyrolls · 07/01/2011 17:33

So who is the management company suggesting removes the leaves? The next thing you will find is that they won't work in the garage because the leaves are slippery and it is a health and safety risk.

Also just out of curiousity, if said leaves get walked into the main communal areas of the building will they remain there? They are debris surely and therefore should be cleared as other debris would be.

Also sweep imo means sweeping with a brush not a sweep with 2 eyes (or 1 Grin) around to see if there is any rubbish on the floor!

agedknees · 07/01/2011 18:20

Figgy - my sentiments exactly.
