To use the TV as a babysitter....

Is it wrong to put my 12 week old DD in her bouncy chair infront of special agent oso for half an hour while I have a bath?

Does it actually do her any harm? She is mesmerised by it and it really does hold her attention for at least half an hour, she chats away!

Do others do this or am I awful?

I doubt it's too much of a problem anything - I know lots of people who do it. But must admit, I absolutely wouldn't do it - there is research that shows watching TV is bad for under 2's brains. I used to put my LOs in the bouncy chair in the bathroom with me and some toys. Not as relaxing though, I admit, because don't think they'd go for half an hour. Think it depends on how much support you have, and how much you need this time.

She is 12 weeks old, I doubt she'd notice you were gone if it holds her attention, as long as you can hear her if she crys then you should be fine, not like she will go anywhere

Please stop giving yourself a hard time. why are you even asking ? give yourself a break, woman. anything that holds her attention whilst you have a bath is called a 'godsend', be it a toy, tv or whatever.

I refuse to believe that an occasional 30mins of TV to help out mummy can damage the brain of a child or baby. Seriously. I don't care what the studies say personally - research can be reported to say whatever the researcher likes, and I am certainly not an avid TV watcher. A baby will watch moving lights and sounds, it just happens that the lights and sounds are on a TV. Only my opinion.

Enjoy the bath gf x

What is she going to choke on? OP, do not leave your baby watching tv with lumps of raw carrot...

otchayaniye · 07/01/2011 16:27

I happen to think the research on this is a bit dodgy. That said, I wouldn't sit her in front of the tv as there is no need to. Bring her into the bath with you. Or have her on the floor on a towel with some toys. Or cot, if you have one, with some toys, black and white cards.

I think there is potential negative impact on more than half an hour. I make a point of strictly limiting it to chunks of 20 mins or so.

Ivette · 07/01/2011 16:42

i used to do that when my DD was small, she is 3 now and fine!

usualsuspect · 07/01/2011 16:44

Whatever works for you, just do it

charliesmommy · 07/01/2011 16:52

Why not wait until she is asleep before you get into the bath.

Or put a radio on and put a moving mobile in front of her.. (although I fail to see what damage a tv screen could do for half an hour so long as it wasnt something with too many flashing lights...

TheManWhoSoldtheWorld · 07/01/2011 16:52

Babytv is cool. My DC loved it.

If I was having a shower and all associated, they would come with me. Lay in bouncer/ cot.
