to complain to the school

DS is in Y4 at the local primary and every Friday afternoon, they have outside PE, followed by 'Golden Time'.

Now it turns out that the children's chosen activity for 'Golden Time' is to bring in a dvd from home and watch it together as a class-I think they vote for which dvd they watch.

When the weather is bad, outside PE is cancelled and then the Whole afternoon is spent watching dvds and chatting, according to DS, who doesn't like it as he often can't hear the DVD for all the noise of the chatting, and is often uninterested in the dvd anyway.

The teacher uses this time to catch up on her marking Hmm.

AIBU to feel that this teacher is acting lazily and unprofessionally and to feel irritated that my son is not being educated -rather baby sat?

Or is regular dvd watching normal practice in most primary schools on Friday afternoons?

I have no problem with this as the occasional end of term treat, or indeed if they watch something educational. But DS has spent vast amounts of some time watching Disney pixar rubbish over the holidays, and needs to improve his literacy!

With the weather as it is in this country the timetable should be such that they get in the hall if wet. DCs need PE and it shouldn't be taken away because it rains.

earwicga · 07/01/2011 19:09

containher - is that during wet play? I think you are being a little precious if that is what you are complaing about.

Our school halls (both of them) are timetabled every session for indoor activities (gymnastics, dance, assembly etc..) Outdoor PE is timetabled differently so if it's bad weather, tough. The hall/gym are already being used. Lots of schools are compromised on space in this way.

YANBU, by the way. Tempting though it might be to stick them in front of a DVD on a wet Friday afternoon, I would never dare to think I could get away with it. Not nowadays, anyway.

My sister recently took her 11 year old ds to watch the new Fockers film and found it completely inappropriate with lots of jokes about erections and impotence.

Euphemia-

DS says they were watching dvds for around an hour-hand writing practice for 20 mins.

Balance seems wrong to me.

I never said that it was every day, nor did I make it in any way a criticism. (I actually do think that PPA is ridiculous, but don't blame the schools for having to schedule it in. Teachers are forced to waste far too much of their time on centrally-dictated administrative nonsense.) I just wondered whether this was a particularly ill-thought-out and lazy PPA session.

Can't believe any school is showing "Meet the Fockers."

We're not even allowed to show a PG in our primary school. Wallace & Gromit is a PG, ffs! And Charlie & the Chocolate Factory. Yet we can't show them (at Christmas, an annual treat) to 11 year olds!!

YANBU "golden time" every week seems a bit excessive anyway but to then spend it watching the telly is a piss take. Couldn't they do art instead or a group game? (wink murder was always a favourite for last few minutes of PE when I was at school.) Failing that, bring in a favourite board game? presentations?

ShoppingDays · 07/01/2011 21:36

YANBU. I can't think what is supposed to be "golden" about watching a DVD.
