son for singing all the words to twinkle twinkle little star perfectly today. No mean feat but he has a speech delay / disorder and up until the end of last year was only vocalising and not verbalising........

[very proud mummy smiley]

Hell no!!! Well done him Grin

mutznutz · 07/01/2011 00:14

No that's fantastic, well done to him! Grin

They do say that the 'flow' of singing can help with some speech disorders.

Just be prepared to come back in a week and start a thread entitled "How the hell can I shut my little man up??" Lol Wink

outnumbered2to1 · 07/01/2011 00:16

hell yeah - it was too cute. he didn't think i was listening cos i was in the kitchen and he was in the living room (he doesn't do command performances Smile )
but it was perfect. Even better than hearing him "mum" for the first time....

ds still only can do "up above" in twinkle twinkle so i say well done too. (waiting for a speech group to come through)

outnumbered2to1 · 07/01/2011 00:22

My DS has been seeing a speech therapist since just after he turned 2 but only because i stamped my feet and pouted and shouted and screamed (only a slight exaggeration but you get the meaning).

He hadn't made any sounds at all as a baby. No gurgles or blah blah blahs or any of those cute wee noises babies make.

But still my doctor was going down the "lets wait and see when he's 3 route till i went Ninja Mamma on his ass!!

He attends a speech group once a week as well as additional support in his nursery.

Sadly speech delay is growing at an alarming according to many local nursery schools here. I wonder if it's a national thing?

mutznutz · 07/01/2011 00:25

'rate'... sorry

FFS that looks like I'm taking the pee doesn't it? Cos I forgot to include the word 'rate' in my last post...I'm not I promise!! Blush

outnumbered2to1 · 07/01/2011 00:27

hey mutznutz it's fine i've just realised that in my OP i said "the end of last year" meaning the end of 09 / beginning of 2010 because i keep forgetting this is 2011......

No, well done indeed. Grin

My DS is 2.9yrs and had a speech therapy assessment yesterday as he has only started putting 2 words together fairly recently. At his HV 2year check they said to wait another 6 months as he was going to be starting nursery in September, we had a follow up at the end of October and then got referred.

I'm now waiting for his report and appointment for a weekly group speech therapy play session.

He was well behaved at his assessment. (Probably because I promised him a new Thomas the Tank book if he was a good boy and played nicely with the ladies we were going to see).
They told me that his listening and attention skills were excellent for his age. I knew that much already, it was only his verbal skills that are delayed and I was concerned about but I still felt terribly proud of him. Smile

outnumbered2to1 · 07/01/2011 01:03

liv77 - that is good news for your DS and hopefully he will soon be getting the help he deserves.

My DS2 also has fantastic listening and attention skills (he can hear the biscuit cupboard being opened from upstairs or outside in the garden).
But it was only his speech there seems to be a problem with although it looks like we are on the right track now thankfully

Yes, the distance at which boys can hear cupboard doors opening is indeed quite remarkable. As indeed are their powers of observation/deduction into which bits of furniture they will need to move/climb onto so they can get to the said cupboard when you are out of the room. Grin

outnumbered2to1 · 07/01/2011 01:35

Grin - boys and cupboard door openings and access to cupboard doors ....... i'm sure there is a research grant in there somewhere...

psml..... i caught my DS2 a few weeks ago attempting to move the kitchen table closer to the worktop to get to the cupboard....

My DH never gets the word right. He always sings

Up above the sky so bright
Like a diamond in the night

I keep telling him, but to no avail. It really shouldn't be that hard for a grown up, should it?

mumeeee · 07/01/2011 11:53

Well Done to your DS
