To not understand the point of 'Mild Cheddar'

Or medium for that matter.

What is it for? Why would you buy it? It tastes of rubber. Even DCs 5 and 3 who are definitely not food snobs, far prefer Extra Mature crumbly cheddar.

And don't say for cooking because then the recipe tast bland. So what is the point?

YANBU, if cheese doesn't stink, then it's just not worth it.

southeastastra · 06/01/2011 21:38

a girl once called me a philistine becasue i didn't like cheese, what did she mean exactly!

SoMuchToBits · 06/01/2011 21:40

SEA - maybe she meant you only liked Philadelphia! Wink

Ooooh Morbier. They have it in Waitrose. I indulge occasionally [drool emoticon].

Smallstuff · 06/01/2011 21:44

YANBU there is no point to it... Cheese should twang your taste buds. I am married to someone who won't eat cheese and it is one of his worst points!!!! I have no one to wax lyrical about a really good piece if cheese to!
Over Christmas I have severely overindulged on the cheese front.....if I am going to fill myself with saturated fat it has to taste of something!!

ilovedjasondonovan · 06/01/2011 21:49

We have 3 grades of cheese in this house.

1 for me and DD2 - about level 4 or 5.
1 for DD1 - as mild as she can get it
1 for DH - strength 12!!! it stinks!!

wineonafridaynight · 06/01/2011 21:52

I used to agree but recently someone else bought us a medium cheddar. It was so nice! Usually we only buy strong or extra mature. This had a totally different taste though and was equally as nice.

karen2205 · 06/01/2011 23:30

I reckon the point of mild cheddar is baiting mouse traps and similar.

backwardpossom · 06/01/2011 23:32

God I love cheese... had a particularly beautiful bit of Stilton at New Year.

drools

YANBU.

Memoo · 06/01/2011 23:36

My 15 month old likes mature cheddar, Stilton, Brie but her absolute favourite is Austrian smoked. Mil gave her a cheese straw an dd looked at it and threw it on the floor. Could see her thinking 'what crap is this you have given me'

tallwivglasses · 06/01/2011 23:38

I'm not sure I could live without strong cheddar.

Limelight · 06/01/2011 23:58

It has a use. I reckon you could melt it and use it as part of a puncture repair kit.

HelenaCC · 07/01/2011 00:16

YANBU although I dont mind medium. Mild has all the fat with none of the taste - absolutely pointless.

sayithowitis · 07/01/2011 00:39

Thenightsky - I agree. That is probably the yummiest and most consistently strong cheddars available in the supermarket. I love strong cheese, with as many 'gritty' bits as it is possible to get into a block of the stuff. Mild has the taste and texture of soap.

The only hard, British chesse I like more, is a British 'parmesan style' one that I have managed to get now and again, but I can't remember the name. Lovely in a sandwich with a good onion chutney or a smidgen of strawberry jam! Or on toast with a light spreading of mustard.

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 07/01/2011 00:58

I love cheese, I just don't like 'strong' cheese. It's just a matter of taste

Cheddar's pretty damn boring at the best of times, it's nice as a base for pickles though.

SnotandBothered · 07/01/2011 11:04

Am amazed there are people saying they like the 'taste' as I honestly can't taste anything but rubber. And yes completely agree with utter shiteness of low fat cheese - vile. If you are in a diet, don't eat cheese, it is meant to calorific.

Ditto fruit in cheese somuch - embedded apricots, why?!

Yum to Stilton and dairykee triangles as well.

It depends. For eating cold, the stronger the better. Mouth should be burning.

But extra mature cheese does not melt well. Mild does, exceptionally so, so is better for toasties, pasta bake etc.

So you're all right. Or all wrong. Or something.

SlightlyJaded · 07/01/2011 11:14

No cheese on toast needs mature as much as a sandwich does.

Also nothing at all should be embedded, apricots, herbs, walnuts. No no no

chimchar · 07/01/2011 11:23

used to love mild, but resiliance to tangy tastes has grown, so couldn't go back to tateless rubber.

markies do a strong chedder with balsamic onions in it...cornish cruncher. tiz dreamy.....om nom nom

FreakoidOrganisoid · 07/01/2011 11:23
