My GF and her lift to work.

First hello, I'm new here and I have to confess I'm not a mum, not even a dad (although I'd like to be) but I very much enjoy this site and all the wit and humour it contains.

I thought I'd post this quandary because I'm not sure I'm being reasonable.

I'm in trouble with my other half. She and I work in the same office, but the problem is I like to go to work early - arriving at my desk at 7. She wants me to go half an hour later so she can have a lift in and doesn?t wait around the place till her shift starts.

But I hate driving in at 7 because the traffic is much heavier and I get wound up because I think I might be late.

She would not drive in herself because she doesn't like driving, so giving her my car isn't the obvious option it might seem.

I got up early this morning as usual, went in, she arrived an hour later and now won't speak to me, sticking out her tongue instead.

AIBU?

hendopolis · 06/01/2011 19:46

policeman then

LoveMyGirls · 06/01/2011 19:48

I would compromise, 3 days a week go in for 7.15 and the other 2 she gets the tube, would that work?

scurryfunge · 06/01/2011 19:48

I thought Hendon (training?) Police when I saw the name.

hendopolis · 06/01/2011 19:49

Nah. Anyway I see this has divided opinion, just as it has divided me and my GF

training police hens

SarahStrattonsBaubles · 06/01/2011 19:50

So it is a newspaper? Grin

I thought Police initially, but I've never heard anyone call their station an office.

hendopolis · 06/01/2011 19:51

LovemyGirls, I think that kind of compromise is what's going to have to happen

Scots police call it an office. Depends really what you do.

hendopolis · 06/01/2011 19:52

Training Police Hens! You've got me

Eggsactly right, ha ha.

SerendipitousHarlot · 06/01/2011 19:53

I think you're right, OP. If you're giving her a lift, then she falls in with your plans, or gets to fuck.

Alternatively, just have a massive row about it, until she storms out shouting 'I'LL MAKE MY OWN WAY IN!' and you can continue quietly going about your business in the mornings Wink

How do you stand all that together time?

MadameCastafiore · 06/01/2011 19:54

Bloody hell she is afcting like a child - poking her tongue out and ignoring you - she can get up early or get the tube and lump it.

LoveMyGirls · 06/01/2011 19:55

Yes! So chuffed I found the solution to save your skin Grin

hendopolis · 06/01/2011 19:55

Well, its not too bad, because as I say our shifts mean we often don't coincide. And as I say it's a big place and our paths don't cross that much. I love her anyway so it's no big deal to see her.

If it's your car and you pay the insurance, tax, petrol and the rest, you drive it in when you like and if she wants a lift, then she goes when you go.

If the car is a joint possession, then you need to compromise.

QuintessentialShadows · 06/01/2011 20:03

Your working hours are really long. Do you really need to get in half an hour early to get organized? I really think you should compromise and offer her 7.15, and if she is ready when you leave, she gets a lift. No waiting around.

When dh and I worked in the same office, he drove the car and I got a lift in. Until he started taking his motorbike to cut down on time in traffic. Then I was spending twice as long time on 2 buses, changing at Hammersmith, instead. That is when I decided to start working from home. Hmm It improved my commuting time, my work life balance, and besides, coffee was much better.

hendopolis · 06/01/2011 20:07

QS, I think the compromise is what's going to have to happen
