in thinking £40 quid wellies aren't cheap?

I gave my MIL a pair of funky wellies for her Christmas. She has a polly tunnel and does a lot of out doorsy stuff so I thought tastefull wellies would be good.
Anyhoo, she called last night to say they were leaking. As the conversation went on I said how much they cost (£42 bloody quid plus P&P) to which she replied, "well, you get what you pay for"!
Don't want this to be a slag of the MIL
post, but am suddenly concerned that I am actually a total cheap skate.

maybe she thought you said "for £2" :)

YANBU. But, if she's used to paying for Hunters then £42 is cheap.

HettyAmaretti · 06/01/2011 19:21

Just to be clear, I don't think £42 is cheap.

YAdNBU - you can get much cheaper wellies than that and she was very rude to say such a thing - nice person or not.
Joules wellies are fab and are around that price. I have much more expensive ones too, and quite frankly, they do exactly the same job.
You could return them as they are faulty?

LoveRedShoes · 06/01/2011 19:23

I second the deaf MIL theory!

lochnessmumster · 06/01/2011 19:23

Mmmm maybe she is more of a Hunters type, think I'll stick to smellies next year.

Don't be offended. My fab funky wellies lasted barely 2 months on me (admittedly heavy usage, walking through mud, snow, cycling in them, etc), similar price, bought online.

I went into town today to buy a more robust pair. I noticed on one [ahem] well-known brand of wellie a disclaimer on the label saying some of their models are for "fashion use". And looking at the scale of wellies on offer, the very cheapest adult ones were £20-odd quid, the dearest were £150 ish (fabby footbed ones with neoprene lining etc). So £40 is nearer the bottom end of the scale. On the bright side, the ones I bought were a similar price, although more farmer-y and much much less funky. Ah well.

You should send them back for a refund though - she hasn't had them long at all.

lochnessmumster · 06/01/2011 19:41

Yep, going to send them back and get her one of those chocolate fire guards instead.
Wellies for 'fasion use',sometimes i think I'm living in a parallel universe, now I know I am.

It's not cheap for funky fashion wellies but is very cheap for proper, heavy-usage wellies (Hunters come into the former category since production went to China).

A pair of neoprene-lined (i.e actually warm), comfy-shaped-footbed, non-leaking-after-two-months wellies cost around £200.

For just pottering around the garden in, however, she is being a bit of an ungrateful cow.
