Ireland. Fuckers.

Just went to dentist with a toothache. ?40 for a 2 min look and a script for amoxycillin, come back tomorrow for a root canal. That'll be ?400 by the way, plus xrays plus cleaning plus you'll need another appt for 2 fillings, that'll be another ?250.
Go to chemist, ?20 for anti-b's. Then I get home to find a bill in the mail for ?150 day charge for a test I had as a fecking public patient in hospital 2 months ago.

And my car broke down, ?450 to fix.

bastard bollocks.

Ironically.... you can only find those NHS dentists at the end of a rainbow.

JosieRosie · 05/01/2011 16:01

One of the many MANY reasons I don't live there any more. You have my sympathy BuzzLightBeer Smile How they can still get away with charging such extortionate prices for everything is beyond me

chillichill · 05/01/2011 16:02

I sympathize, I'm from the states originally. have you tried a dental college? I used to get things done by dental students, worth looking into.

TattyDevine · 05/01/2011 16:02

I couldn't even get an NHS dentist when I was pregnant and "entitled" to free care.

NHS dentists still charge for things like that, though, dont they, though probably less than what you said. I think its subsidised rather than free. And if you had to have all that done, it would still be quite a few £££.

Twenty euro is a lot for a prescription though, I paid £7 ish for the very same drug about a week ago, which is a tenner less (in pounds)

And we wouldn't be getting a charge from a hospital for anything either.

So, YANBU!

BUZZ wants to say what he means I found his swearing very funny. (but not all foul language is amusing)

I do sympathise, Buzz. It would upst me more than a little

ChickensAreFlyingUnderTheRadar · 05/01/2011 16:05

My BIL was charged 100 Euro for some prescription indigestion tablets last year. And my MIL is sent for MRI scans every time she complains of pain anywhere. YANBU.

I agree it's a disgrace.
One of the many reasons that I moved back to the UK.
I used to have to pay £70 a month for my AD prescription - no wonder I was feckin depressed.

chillichill · 05/01/2011 16:09

they were final year students, supervised the whole time. how do you think they learn. beggers can't be choosers (not meaning you op, I was too poor for a dentist at the time)

truffleshuffle · 05/01/2011 16:09

Imeant 70 euro not £70

BuzzLightBeer · 05/01/2011 16:11

Theres only the one dental college that I know of (trinity) and when I called a few years back (to ask about implants and such for my husband; he ended up going to budapest for it for a 1/4 of the price) they pretty much pissed themselves laughing at me.

I'm just so fecking sick of it, especially all at once. Its insanely expensive. The hospital charge really got to me as I had asked beforehand if it would cost me anything (public patient is supposed to mean free except for bed charges and a&e) but there is the bill and I have to pay it. It even tells me its overdue and legal proceedings will follow if I don't pony up. Its the first bloody bill they sent!

Grr.

Re NHS dentists, our town was one of the first places to have no NHS provision at all. One by one all the the NHS dentists turned private only or closed down. There was a concerted effort to get more dental provision and now it's really good. DS2 broke his front tooth back in November and tore a baby tooth out of his gum doing some damage. We had 3 dental appointments within a month and he now has a perfect front tooth and it cost nothing. Mind you I know it won't be so cheap for me.

JosieRosie · 05/01/2011 16:21

It's disgusting BuzzLightBeer, you really do seem to get ripped off at every opportunity. You would think the effing HEALTH SERVICE might cut people some slack but apparently not. My mum has osteoporosis and has shelled out over 1000 euro so far for treatment! All she's had is about 3 consultant appointments, a couple of bone scans and a couple of prescriptions Shock

TigerseyeMum · 05/01/2011 16:38

It is disgusting, definitely, however I am in a county in England where specialist dentistry is not available on the NHS so the root canal treatment I need on my front teeth will cost me £1,500. I have nt yet had it done and doubt I will at that price.

Soon though the NHS will cease to exist and once it is in the hands of private business it will also go down this route so we had all better start saving the pennies Wink
