Should I call the police? WWYD?

I was knocked off my bike on the way to work this morning. (Car came out of a junction and did not see me despite the fact I had lights on)
Although I'm very shaken and my back is a bit sore there was no real harm done. The driver did stop to ask if I was ok but did not offer me any of his details. (I made a note of his reg though.)

My DH thinks I should call the police and report the driver as he says that I was lucky not to have been seriously hurt.

I'm not sure about his car but there was no damage to my bike. My helmet is a mess (Really glad I wore one!) I went to the hopsital for a check over and they say I will probably be quite sore for the next few days.

I'm concerned whether work will let me take time off as sick or if I will lose pay as a result - if so the driver should pay this loss of earnings for me and buy me a new helmet or AIBU?

WWYD?

You really should report this, agree with your DH.

claireybear82 · 05/01/2011 14:17

yes report it! really rude of the not to stop not to mention being against the law! also if you have any long term problems from it then its best its reported now

KaraStarbuckThrace · 05/01/2011 14:18

Yes report it. He essentially left the scene of an accident that should have been reported at the time.

backwardpossom · 05/01/2011 14:19

Of course you should report it! Hope you're not too sore.

clairey - the driver did stop.

cornflower123 · 05/01/2011 14:19

I agree too, report it. Hope you have no longlasting problems, but reporting it means you're covering yourself. Well done getting reg details.

SuchProspects · 05/01/2011 14:19

I agree with your DH, you should report. At the very least that's careless driving. The next person they hit may not be so lucky.

SuchProspects · 05/01/2011 14:20

Also - as well as your losses, the hospital should be able to claim the cost to the NHS of treating you from his insurance.

Bathsheba · 05/01/2011 14:21

You MUST call the police.

My DH was knocked off his bike in exactly the same way on almost exactly the same day about 9 years ago - at this time of year people driving at that time of the morning should be automatically breathalysed.

definately report it.

iheartdusty · 05/01/2011 14:21

Report it now - over the next couple of weeks you might find some more serious problems emerging with your back, neck etc, and the driver's insurance should cover any losses you have as a result - but the first question anyone will ask is - when did you report it and to whom.

FiveFeetTwo · 05/01/2011 14:23

What did you say to the driver when he stopped to ask you how you were?

If you said you were ok then you can't be surprised that he didn't hang around.

I'm not sure that I understand what you want the police to do? Is it just to get his details to make a claim against his insurance or do you think he should be prosecuted? Just be aware that his insurance company may come back at you claiming that you caused the accident and there might be a prang on his car. Do you have insurance?

I hope you are feeling a bit better and your back isn't too sore.

oh right sorry i read that as they didnt stop.

CarGirl · 05/01/2011 14:25

Yes report it, you may well be failing more sore tomorrow than you do now.

All accidents where someone is hurt should be reported.

Also sounds like they were driving without due care & attention, the police may want to prosecute.

Yes you can claim on his insurance for lost of earnings, physio, new helmet etc

FakePlasticTrees · 05/01/2011 14:28

Another saying report it.

cornshilk007 · 05/01/2011 14:28

yes report it - the driver should pay for your time off work and your helmet. He should have given you his details so that you could contact him so the police will now be able to trace him for you.

Sassybeast · 05/01/2011 14:28

I thought that you were oblidged to report any accident if there was an injury. the onus is on you to report the accident as you told the driver you were not hurt.

amberleaf · 05/01/2011 14:31

You are not hurt and told the driver this when he/she stopped.

what exactly do you want the police to do?

tomhardyismydh · 05/01/2011 14:34

I dont see the need to report it, you are not injured as far as can see from op you did not recive any treatment.

driver stoped so clearly at the time you and driver assessed together you where fine. So no need to report.

emmyloulou · 05/01/2011 14:35

Reprting the driver, depends what you want. If it's to get him in "trouble". Not a lot the police will do now, as the scene has been left, one word against the other and in reality they aren't really interested unless there is serious injury.

They'll give you a ref and that's about it.

emmyloulou · 05/01/2011 14:36

999 ffs you can't be serious Shock

Itsapuppet · 05/01/2011 14:38

Unbelievable 999, seriously, for a scratch cycle helmet. Hmm

titchy · 05/01/2011 14:38

No of course you don't use 999 Hmm Phone your local police station, or your Police authority's non-emergency number (website or phone directory).

GypsyMoth · 05/01/2011 14:38

Er, the driver may claim YOU were at fault. You would need witnesses for it too. Were there any? Did you get details if so?
