to not feel sorry for Next's losses

I tried to buy LOADS of stuff from Next online in the six weeks before Christmas and every damn thing was sold out.

I've just received an email from them telling me to check out their summer collection online now. Why? I don't want summer clothes right now but you can guarantee that when I do, it will all be sold out. My sister has said the same so I am guessing that there are loads of people out there who would be more than happy to buy Next products if they actually had anything in season left to sell!

They need to get their act together!

Doig, strange you say about things being sold out before Xmas...

I got my VIP Sale List through and booked my slot for 22nd December. A couple of weeks previously I'd seen a top that I REALLY wanted but it was sold out.

However, when I went onto my slot on the evening of the 22nd, it was available in the sale for less than half price, in ALL sizes!

Turns out that it looks rubbish anyway so didn't keep it BUT, I wonder whether they start to pull things from the normal ranges to get prepared for the big Sale. Seems crazy considering I was going to pay the full price for it initially, but it's not the first time that something has supposedly been out of stock and then miraculously been available in the sale!

Niceguy2 · 05/01/2011 13:26

I stopped shopping at Next years ago except for at xmas where I usually rush round and grab some little pressies for people.

I hate the sales with a passion. They're more like a cross between a riot & a jumble sale. Most of the stuff is specially brought in too. Not even a real sale.

Their website at sale time is sold out and they let their best customers buy first. So customers like me never get a look in. Fine with me.

Their normal priced stuff is way too expensive for what it is. I can often get designer gear for a few quid more or if I shop smart (eg. online, TK Maxx etc) often less than Next prices.

Their designs have become a bit boring too. years ago they were nice. Not anymore.

Their Next branded electrical items are usually just some cheap chinese knockoff with the Next logo on it. Their Next ipad type tablet was so poor its laughable.

I think they've rested on their laurels for too long and hope they can change soon. Think M&S went through similar a few years back didn't they?

surfandturf · 05/01/2011 13:28

I love Next - they are the only retailer who do trousers to fit me (I'm a short-arse! Smile)

I had a VIP invite to view the sale early (Am I that good a customer? Hmm) and they didn't even have much stock available then.

I did get some lovely new curtains though...

paddingtonbear1 · 05/01/2011 13:35

I still buy some stuff from Next as they do a petite range, but it's not nearly as good as it used to be. I liked their jeans a few years ago but prefer looking in TKMaxx these days. I avoid the sales like the plague! And yes the website is awful.

BalloonSlayer · 05/01/2011 13:36

I think they should stick to more anonymous/classic stuff.

I bought a lovely t-shirt last summer with a big, bold pattern. I was very pleased with it until I found out that four mums at the school gates had the same one. Away from the school gates, I would see one on someone every time I went shopping.

I sent it to my sister in Australia in the end. I now have a voucher to spend but everything in there I have seen on someone else recently.

Niecie · 05/01/2011 13:36

Niceguy2 - you are right about M&S - they did go through similar and have learnt their lesson, by and large, so it can be done.

Not sure Next would be able to do it - they have a different type of customer and I would think it is not so diverse as M &S which means if they alienate the Next 'type' they might not have any customers left.

Every time someone mentions Next on this site there will be people saying how vile and badly made it is but I honestly feel its like any large retailer of high street fashion - you have to sort the wheat from the chaff.

There are not many retailers where absolutely everything is vile and horrible including the children's stuff.

I never wear Next clothing myself - I ordered a Mac earlier last year and it was really bad and overpriced so I sent it back, but I wouldn't say all their collections are like that - I think that Mac was a particularly bad example. If I were to order a coat this spring I might find it very suitable - I just dont tend to look on Next for me.

I haven't really clothed my son in anything from there since he was a baby, but my daughter, however, 2nd child so less time to shop, and a chubby little thing so I found their sleepsuits etc fitted her shape well. Also, lots of tunic and legging combinations which for chubby toddlers is an excellent way to dress them, both comfortable, practical, but still sweet looking. Its not bad quality. It washes fine, doesn't fade, she grows out of it before it wears out. Some of the colours and patterns I dont like, so I dont buy, but there is a vast range, so you just avoid the stuff you dont buy. I've heard bad things about the clothing for older children, which may well be the case (I think they are guilty of the very grown up stuff for 9 year olds etc) but I haven't got to that stage yet.

And to be able to order something, assuming it is in stock, at 6pm and have it turn up the following morning is nothing short of remarkable - they are the only people who can do this. Amazon can guarantee some of their stuff before 1pm the next day but charge about £9 for the privilige and you have to wait in to sign for it. That's the only online retailer that even comes close in terms of speed. Most websites doing next day delivery need your order by midday or 1pm at the latest, which is still a very good service but they tend to charge for it ££££.

So, like most places, Next have their strengths and weaknesses, their pros and cons. But I've already answered the OP about the stock thing and I wholeheartedly agree, its very frustrating, and I think this Christmas was particularly bad - I think someone was ultra cautious when deciding how much stuff to preorder when they did Winter collections. Hope they learn from it, or I might have to find somewhere else when I decide my DD needs more stuff on a whim!

Rockbird · 05/01/2011 16:35

I don't know what you lot were doing but I got loads of stuff for DD in the sale, everything I earmarked was available except for one pair of pyjamas and it all arrived straight after Christmas.

I find the quality fine and the delivery service is top notch. Still, the fewer of you that shop there the more there is for me :o

TattyDevine · 05/01/2011 16:37

You saying that has made me seriously wonder if they do actually put a percentage of stuff aside for the sale Rockbird - which seems weird but there must be a "marketing" reason for it.

frgr · 05/01/2011 16:47

"Either the website was shut over night (12am to 6am)"

Shock

what's the point of shopping online then!

i don't understand why some companies have "opening hours" for the websites. isn't the point of the internet that you can do it in your PJs at 2am in the morning? Hmm

i mean, maintenance every now and then, fine. but closing a website overnight? it's the most stupid thing i've heard all week

i wonder if they still do it? i normally buy stuff from amazon/gifts at night time. i would not shop in Next if I found the website was down like that - not that it's an issue since i don't tend to shop in Next anyway.....

still, my point stands I think!

I don't really like Next either. The website is horrendous, just show the clothes in a normal way. Everything is really overpriced and as others have said I keep seeing people wearing the same tops as me so now I never wear them.

Their kid's clothes don't fit my kids- especially the girl's stuff. One of my dd's is very petite and there is just nothing in Next that she can wear. Occasionally if there is something it invariably is part of 2 or 3 part set where tights would be too small but dress or skirt too big etc.

And the Next sale!! Never seen so much trash in my life, worse than a jumble sale...

I remember last year going into Next in the Spring looking for kid's clothes and everything was short sleeved and summery- we live in Scotland and we had snow here till May last year. I didn't want summer clothes- we only need summer clothes if we are goinbg abroad Wink

Jojocat · 05/01/2011 17:01

I went into Next on the third day of the sale and there were about 2 items left in my children's sizes. It was the same in M & S. Is there usually this little in the sale.
