to want my baby to wear babygrows, not little 'outfits'.

I love my 4 week DS in his little soft baby grows. Why would I want him to wear horrible stiff jeans and shirts? But now I have loads of these 'outfits' from family and friends for his birth and christmas (including the most repulsive stiff Diesel trousers which probably cost stupid money) which they keep saying 'Why isn't he wearing his XXX'.

Don´t want to be ungrateful, but he's just too cute in his baby clothes, and there's plenty of time for all that grown up stuff later. Not so easy to tell that to the gift givers though.

I used babygros for my first child until he was about 4 months but I didn't think that they were particularly warm. Another problem I often found was that my son would pull the foot of the babygro and then his leg would be tangled-up in the body part.

Elasticated jogging bottoms and a cardigan over a vest (long or short sleeved) was my outfit of choice for DS2 and DD. Didn't get much use out of the babygros for subsequent children.

Porcelain · 04/01/2011 19:25

I agree, DS is babygros all the way. He has some soft dungarees for posh and some rompers, but thats it.

Babies have no waists, so trousers don't fit, and the elastic can dig in. Shirts ride up so I only use bodysuits.

I have discovered what baby shoes are for, when he is in dungarees or rompers, a soft shoe keeps his socks on so old ladies don't keep telling me he's cold.

NinkyNonker · 04/01/2011 19:29

YANBU. Although 5 mo old DD is so long (takes after her 6'5" father I suspect!) that most babygros don't fit her properly...but I still dress her in vests and jersey leggings type thing. I tried her in a (gifted) pair of jeans once and she looked so uncomfy they came straight off again!

illgetyoubutler · 04/01/2011 19:34

Ooh, Im glad Im not alone on this!
When my two were babies, all I would ever dress them in were, long sleeved popper vests usually under babygros, or cotton romper suits.
And as they got older, and they still wear them now frequently, they upgraded to soft cotton lined dungerees.
Everything soft, nothing scratchy, fiddly, awkward, stiff, or riding up the back. All in ones are very cost effective as well.
I really dislike seeing babies sleeping in jeans.

classydiva · 04/01/2011 19:35

I had my babies in babygrows at 8 months, they look so cute! They are now 17 and 22!

I hate babies in jeans they must be real uncomfortable!

moondog · 04/01/2011 19:36

God yes.
Those vile jeans and trainers combos on little kids.
Fugly.

perfectstorm · 04/01/2011 19:38

YANBU. I kept DS in babygrows until he was crawling everywhere for exactly that reason. They are comfy, especially for little people who can't get the wind out - last thing they need is a tight, rigid waistband.

I always asked people, very politely, how they would like to sleep in jeans, when they made comments about the babygrows. Most, to be fair, conceded the point once they twigged that sleep is what babies mostly do.

Caboodle · 04/01/2011 19:42

YANBU-jeans for babies are just wrong. Even worse than 'outfits' are designer outfits with the designer name all over them....yuk.

weasle · 04/01/2011 19:47

YANBU

my boys have only had jeans once reliably out of nappies at 3years-ish. I hate jeans on babies. I do have lots of outfits for ds3 (7 months) which i sometimes use as i think i should 'use them up', but certainly ds2 and 3 were in babygrows all the time for 4 months.

and the baby jeans and trousers often have complicated pockets, zips and buttons. Pockets - wtf?!

dessen · 04/01/2011 19:49

My little ones always wore babygros & it's so much easier. Now my dd spends alot of the day in tights as she's crawlling

Gap once sold this beautiful little pea coat for girls, with two huge buttons on the sash at the back, right across the waist. They started sizing it at 0-3 months, when almost all babies sleep on their backs. And imagine the buttons digging in in the carseat or buggy, too.

Whoever designed them had never had much to do with any actual babies.

Agree that those small outfits and wee trainers are beyond naff, too; worse with logos.

victoriascrumptious · 04/01/2011 19:55

Hate 'outfits' on baby's. I also hate seeing skirts and dresses on baby's who are of crawling age. In fact I hate seeing dresses on under 2's full stop. How the hell are they supposed to move around properly?

victoriascrumptious · 04/01/2011 19:56

babies

tassisssss · 04/01/2011 19:56

my youngest and most probably my last is 2.5 and I have 2 babygros left that still fit her! Thankfully she loves them too!

OP, where possible can you exchange it for the same outfit but for next winter or the one after?

MogTheForgetfulCat · 04/01/2011 20:00

YANBU, I have kept my 2 DSs in babygros when they were small for as long as I thought I could get away with it without it looking like I couldn't be bothered to get them dressed (i.e. at least 6-7 months). Really dislike 'outfits' (too matchy-matchy), and especially stiff jeans - DS2 is nearly 3 and complains that one pair of his jeans are too stiff - 'they don't bend, mummy' Grin

MissyPie · 04/01/2011 20:03

YANBU - a family friend gave our DD a pair of jeans for Xmas - she was coming over for dinner and I decided to put the jeans on my DD (she's 11weeks) I could not believe how big she looked and for the most part uncomfortable!!

I'm sticking to babygrows in future, She did however wear a lovely knitted dress and tights for Christmas day, which was beautiful, I reckon that the outfits should be kept for special occasions - like someone has already said...who wants to fall asleep in jeans anyway??

sungirltan · 04/01/2011 20:05

yadnbu. i'm sorry but i hate hate hate jeans on babies. jeans on toddlers = hardwearing and protect their little knees etc. jeans on little babies = stiff and scratchy!

dd wore all in ones 99% of the time until she was at least 3 months - which is when she fitted in to 'newborn' sized clothes he he. lucky for me you can't buy many daft outfits in prem sizes.

friends bought dd a range of cute hats and seemed happy with that if you need suggestions if they want to buy gidts?

TheSydenhamSet · 04/01/2011 20:17

I used to dress my ds in outfits. Don't know what I was thinking! It just looks wrong. I knew with dd that I was going to go down the soft clothes route, so baby grows, soft track suits, etc have been her wardrobe and she looks so darn cute and snuggly. I was given some gap jeans which were worn a few times but have been put in the 'pass on' pile along with courduroy trousers etc. I've saved all of ds's clothes for if/when we have another boy. I'll definitely be having a sort through and getting rid of all the 0-6 months jeans, courdoroys, trousers, shirts etc and might even get rid of the 6-1 yr stuff as well! Seen some really, really cute playsuits for older babies.

TheSydenhamSet · 04/01/2011 20:18

YANBU

ChinaCup · 04/01/2011 20:53

YANBU. I did the cute little outfits thing for DS1 and I wonder what was going on in my head - their tops ride up, socks fall off, they look cute for about 5 minutes then they just look uncomfortable. DS2 is 7 months and wears babygros all the time; he's warm, comfy and easy to dress. He can crawl just fine in them so I don't see any reason to dress him in anything else until he's 15 or so Grin

StarlightPrincess · 04/01/2011 21:29

YANBU...but I love proper clothes on little ones. Babygrows to me are pyjamas or house clothes.

kaymondo · 04/01/2011 21:44

Before i had ds i thought all babies lived in babygrows, then when i went to my first mother and baby group with ds in a babygrow (he was about 6 weeks old) all of the other babies were dressed in outfits and i felt like everyone was looking at me because i'd taken him out in his pj's! Have to say since then i do tend to put ds in outfits if we're out and about but am very careful about what i buy so no uncomfortable waist bands etc. and if we're at home its babygrows all the way!

Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 04/01/2011 21:47

If my DS14 could get himself a babygro, he'd be in 7th heaven lazylittlegit
YANBU. DS was in outfits at first as I was young and foolish and thought they were cute. I soon worked out my mistake and put him in soft clothes. The only thing I didn't like much was the gaping poppers underneath in winter, so he use to wear tights underneath!
DD wore soft clothes and simple non frilly dresses with tights or leggings.

giantpurplepeopleeater · 04/01/2011 22:12

YA definately NBU

My DS nearly 5 weeks, will stay in babygrows for as long as I can do it!! Fortunately he didn't get many clothes for xmas, and the ones he did are great, and as his birthday is 11 months away I can't imagine he will get anymore gifts!!
