To think it sad that we don't call our PILs our DPILs?

Don't get me wrong, I'm at the front of the queue to have a good old moan about the PILs. But however much they drive me crazy they are still family and I love them. I understand that not everybody feels that way, but then not everyone loves other family members all the time and they still get a "D" prefix. In leaving it out for PILs are we not implicitly assuming that they are not dear to us? Surely that's a teensy bit unfair?

I dont put a D in front of anything. I find the abbreviations very annoying.. lol!!

FranSanDisco · 04/01/2011 10:51

If it matters to you then add a 'D'. Personally I won't be doing that Smile.

Longtalljosie · 04/01/2011 10:53

I vote we stop with the D-ing altogether. It makes us sound like we all wear frilly pinnies and have crocheted coverings for our spare bog rolls.

Psammead · 04/01/2011 10:57

I'm with LongTallJosie.

mutznutz · 04/01/2011 10:59

What Charliesmommy said...the whole 'darling' thing makes me want to puke. I don't refer to my family in real life as 'darling whatever' so I think it just looks plain odd on here Lol.

And what's with 'Dcs' anyway...does that mean darling childrens? That sounds like Alexanda the Meerkat Grin

rodformyownback · 04/01/2011 10:59

I'll give it a try!

DMIL in her loveliness offered to do all of our laundry FOR A MONTH after ds2 was born by CS. DMIL! Unfortunately I ended up with no clothes as DH failed to drop off or pick up said laundry in a timely fashion, and I had to listen to DMIL tell me at least 3 times that I am creating work for myself by washing clothes that are not dirty (how does she know? Is she sniffing my smalls?). DMIL is now offended that I've gone back to doing my own washing. D,D MIL!

ha! Somehow DPIL makes me think of depilatory cream...

mutznutz · 04/01/2011 11:01

Do you know what? Reading your last post there was even more annoying than reading text type. We have keyboards...why don't we just use them to type proper words?

I'm sure it would make life easier for newbies who don't have to keep referring to the acronyms list Hmm

charliesmommy · 04/01/2011 11:01

Got to say, when I see a large post talking about DS DB DH DP DSS etc.. I lose track and find it difficult to fathom out who is who...

rodformyownback · 04/01/2011 11:09

I have to confess to loving the acronyms.

I'm a relative newbie (recent returner anyway) and the amount of time saved by acronyms quickly made up for the time used checking the glossary when I first started posting. Surely Mumsnet just wouldn't be the same without them?

OP posts:
mutznutz · 04/01/2011 11:12

But what makes me laugh more is when someone types out a chapter and verse post and then uses acronyms. If you're going to type that many words, why not go the whole hog and take a few extra seconds out to make it readable to everyone?

storminabuttercup · 04/01/2011 11:16

i think a B is more appropriate

BMIL sticking her nose in

BC's have hidden the pombears

BH has got drunk and locked himself in a paperbag

*situations have been changed to protect identities

charliesmommy · 04/01/2011 11:16

I dont mind MIL, BIL etc as it is more commonly used.. but would much rather see someone write "my son" or "my mum" ... not "my DS1 or DM" ... perhaps its just me.. lol..

mutznutz · 04/01/2011 11:19

Storminabuttercup....I've just brought coffee out through my nose!! Grin

I think 'Lol' 'pmsl' 'MIL' 'BIL' etc are all commonly used across the internet so most people wouldn't have to keep looking them up.

rodformyownback · 04/01/2011 11:20

they are so useful irl(ahem) too. As in "dh, is DS1'S B-A-T-H time?" Or a soothing "YABU, sweetheart" under the breath as DH gets wound up by his dad's infuriating pomposity...

Yes they are ludicrous, but lovely. I LOVE acronyms. Don't think I realised how much until this moment. D, DAs! Grin

pmsl at BMIL! Must go, BH is bitching at me to stop MNing and get dressed, can you believe it?

OP posts:
theevildead2 · 04/01/2011 11:22

You have to use the D in front of H or S or M, because it helps to avoid confusion of typos if you only have one letter. MIL alreayd has 3 letters it doesn't need to be longer.4 letters would be a pain in the arse and hardly worth the acronym

storminabuttercup · 04/01/2011 11:22

Why thank you mutz, the highest mumsnet praise Grin

Folicacid · 04/01/2011 11:23

I also find really long and involved posts hard to follow when they get into 'my DSis and DH's DSis' etc. It's like who is who?

What's wrong with my sister and my husband's sister or my sister in law?

Aims80 · 04/01/2011 11:26

I'm fairly new to mumsnet and have never understood the whole "D" thing. Do you use that in real life? No. Let it be read that your family are dear to you, no need to be overly sugery by stating it each time you refer to them.

Understood if you can't be bothered to write "daughter" etc as "D" would may get confusing but I just find it a bit odd :)

mutznutz · 04/01/2011 11:36

What's wrong with my sister and my husband's sister or my sister in law?

I don't know Folicacid...I've never met them but if you care to start a thread, we can assasinate their characters and rip them to shreds for you Grin

DilysPrice · 04/01/2011 13:02

I always do use DMIL DPIL (I think), wouldn't dream of omitting the D, it would be mean.

rodformyownback · 04/01/2011 13:11

People are SO mean about their PILs. Right now there's another AIBU thread going on about "annoying things MILs have said" or some such tosh. As though MILs talk any more crap than anyone else.

OP posts:
rodformyownback · 04/01/2011 13:12

DMILs, sorry!
