Am in the prcoess of booking Summer holiday, found a really good value cottage in France, just gone to book the ferry and it's around £600 return!!!! Admittedly have never actually travelled by ferry before and was expecting it to be around £200 max Blush

Try P & O Ferries - we go with them to France every August from Dover to Calais, family of four - usually around £100 return trip total.

Ingles2 · 04/01/2011 13:29

We do Dover-Calais regularly on Seafrance for £27 each way.

Lizcat · 04/01/2011 13:32

Try LD lines just booked for July. Quote from Brittany car 2 adults 1 child cabins both ways £580, LD okay into le Havre (tolls are about £20) £360. Yes it's not as flash as brittany, but the cabins are clean and all I am going to do is sleep.

Last year we did teh return route via the tunnel - worked out cheaper to stay overnight in a (nice) hotel in France and tunnel was only £73 ish.

COCKadoodledooo · 04/01/2011 13:38

They're ridiculous aren't they?! We want to take dc to Guernsey, where we honeymooned. Wanted to take the ferry and camp because we thought flying/hotels would be too expensive - v surprised at how close the cost was (but still too expensive sadly Sad)

Concordia · 04/01/2011 13:41

yes, we were thinking of going to the isle of wight on holiday - can afford the accommodation but not necessarily the ferry?! i think they are doing their tourist industry a disservice tbh.
try the tunnel for france, it will be much cheaper i suspect.

CrispyTheCrisp · 04/01/2011 14:06

redshinyshoes no, for all of us and a car with P&O. We usually travel over on a weekday (early) and back at around 4pm on a Friday. Oh, and google P&O discount codes as you can usually get 5-10% the internet price

CrispyTheCrisp · 04/01/2011 14:07

off that should say Hmm

Fimbo · 04/01/2011 14:14

We are doing Harwich-Holland via Stenaline overnight with cabin at May half term. It was about £340 return but we paid for most of it using Tesco Clubcard vouchers.

BigGitDad · 04/01/2011 14:19

Red, you are best off doing the Dover-Calais trip and driving, not only is it cheaper but quicker. The St Malo ferry goes about 3mph!

redshinyshoes · 04/01/2011 18:25

Just checked out the Dover-Calais route, will save us £450 and is 9 hours less ferry time, will add on around 4 hours driving time but I think that's a fair exchange! Does anyone know anywhere good to stop over? We're heading to Western France, inbetween Bordeaux & La Rochelle

Le Mans is a very nice town for a stopover and you can avoid the Paris ring road by going that way. Anywhere in the Loire Valley would be nice (worth staying an extra night or two to visit some of the chateaux).

CrispyTheCrisp · 04/01/2011 19:04

Yes, we drive to the Loire and it is about 5.5hrs from Calais. Go via Rouen (new road) and avoid Paris. Somewhere like LeMans or Tours area would be about 4-4.5hrs from Calais and close to the Chateaux which are wonderful

mitochondria · 04/01/2011 19:09

Be glad you don't live on the IOW. Stupid place is only about 4 miles from the mainland. Could probably swim across.

Last time I went back to visit it cost us over £100.

They don't want a tunnel. Then "outsiders" might come.

katiestar · 04/01/2011 19:12

We founf LD lines Dover to Boulogne to be the cheapest last August.

woolymindy · 04/01/2011 19:15

I tried to book a crossing for may half term and it was over 900 quid - and i get a discount too!!!!!!!!!!!!!

we have a house in normandy and it is becoming ridiculous

i think mega drive to and from the chunnel is coming on

goodmanners · 04/01/2011 19:17

Even the isle of wight return is £150 - you can use your tesco clubcard vouchers for alot of ferry crossings though......

Adversecamber you're right of course. I've been away too long.

I'm a Caulkhead. I escaped.

Pesha · 04/01/2011 22:19

I've always found Dover to Dunkerque to be quite a bit cheaper than Dover to Calais and adds no more than about 20 minutes to the drive, if that.
