natknickersinatwist · 01/01/2011 01:05

thats what i meant working9.. they dont need to raise awareness to the tragedy that is SIDs because so many people are aware of it

its absolute bollocks story line.

Kirk1 · 01/01/2011 01:06

I don't know, I haven't watched since 1994. Had no telly at uni, couldn't get back into it. It's not realy life-enhancing is it?

working9while5 · 01/01/2011 01:09

Sorry nat, wasn't directing it at you.. have seen that explanation trotted out etc. Agree totally!

mutznutz · 01/01/2011 01:10

Living in the Eastend all my life makes me unable to watch that crap without tearing my hair out. It's as much like the Eastend as Susan Boyle is like Kate Moss Hmm

SlartyBartFast · 01/01/2011 01:12

i mean it happens - cot death, and nicking babies, but not usually within 2 minutes.. that is why soaps arfe so bad.. do they really think our concentration span is so short

Saucepanman · 01/01/2011 01:48

I am fucking raging at this storyline. Yes I know it's not real but it's too close to home this time of year. My ds1 was stillborn, 9 years ago tomorrow. Every year I am misery itself around new year, so cannot cope with watching this. I am livid that they portray this as a "normal" reaction to infant loss. Much more responsible and helpful to have shown her journey in grief. Does one dispense with morals and decency when writing these things? Stillbirth and neonatal death can be incredibly isolating, as most people may not know anyone who has been through similar. Here was an opportunity to educate and empathise, instead it is sensationalised and a grieving mother=crazy. Where do I complain Angry

MsKLo · 01/01/2011 07:04

I agree saucepan and working9

Complain to the BBC saucepan - I am so sorry for your loss and they need to hear from women like you to tell them how irresponsible and offensive they have been.

It is utter rubbish this story and it is going to go on and on, I cannot watch eastenders anymore and I really really hope they lose a significant amount of viewers because of it

It is a horrible story that should never have been allowed - this could carry on a climax next year all for 'ratings'! Shame on the stupid writers who thought of this and the stupid producers who allowed it and the stupid actors who agreed to play the roles for it.

Boycott eastenders

Panzee · 01/01/2011 08:17

I am so sorry for everyone who feels the loss. I saw about ten seconds of it and wanted to pick up my sleeping boy and give him a cuddle.

But there is hope in that Digital Spy are saying that the reveal has already been filmed - so it's hopefully no more than 6 weeks before the baby goes back.

littleshinyone · 01/01/2011 08:51

It's horrible.
I've been trying to cut down on it for years, but after seeing on a thread on here what was going to happen i've definitely decided to stop watching.

What's fun about bringing that stuff into your life?

rocketleaf · 01/01/2011 09:26

Its always been like that. We gave up watching when we went traveling about 5 years ago. This year were forced to watch it on Xmas day at a friends who it is a big fan. While she was crying I was trying not to laugh. It was so utterly ridiculous.

I didnt know about this story line as I avoid it like the plague but I think is disgusting that the soaps vie with each other to create the most upsetting horrendous story lines and people lap it up. What is wrong with people that the love to watch all this distress happening?

saucepanman - I am so sorry for your lost and the pain you still suffer, there must be so many other people out there affected by this and the BBC don't give a shit, all they care about is bumping up ratings.

MsFox UADNBU!!

skyswept · 01/01/2011 09:36

yanbu

I watched it last night after forgetting the subject matter.

It was extremely upsetting enough with adding the baby swap. They really didn't need to do that especially as she had your sympathy at the SID but then she became a nightmare with the swap. Totally unnecessary and just a step too far. Also why such miserable matter on a night people are trying to cheer up. Any other night and half the story line would have been ok. One for ofcom I think.

nancy10 · 01/01/2011 09:59

The storyline has been no secret for weeks now. You do have a choice as to whether or not you watch it. If you find it upsetting don't watch it! Why put your self through it! Eastenders is always bloody miserable, particularly at this time of year!

Chil1234 · 01/01/2011 10:08

Eastenders, Corrie, Emmerdale... it's all miserable, far-fetched rubbish. Do yourself a massive favour and tune into Radio 4 7pm tomorrow for The Archers! They've been around 60 years now and the most controversial it ever gets is someone snogging in a shower. Sunday's episode is promising dramatic fireworks so something interesting might actually happen. Either way it's far more relaxing to listen to the desperate crappy story-lines of dreary old CrustEnders.

Upgrade!

Chil1234 · 01/01/2011 10:09

more relaxing than to listen to... etc.

chillichill · 01/01/2011 10:12

eastenders is always miserable, true, but this kind of misery is too far, too close to the bone for too many people. its the murders, affairs, dodgy dealings, kidnappings, fires, etc. that make eastenders miserable but fun to watch since it is so ott, but this is just no fun at all and far to personal an experience to exploit on a soap opera. I won't be watching either.

tholeon · 01/01/2011 10:17

there is a long thread on this in the telly addicts section. I agree, have taken Enders off the sky plus now!

NestaFiesta · 01/01/2011 12:34

YANBU. Among other things, its just plain bad writing to single out one character for a permanent series of misfortunes with no respite. Poor old Ronnnie!

Secondly, its an early evening soap opera. If I want disturbing and gritty I'll go to Jimmy McGovern.

I've watched since it started and this will be the end of my watching it again. I've got 2 DSs and like another poster said, have spent years checking on them in the night. SIDS is every mother's worst fear. We mothers are not entertained by watching a mother go through that.

And yes I do know its fiction by the way for those who have pointed it out! But it used to be a guilty pleasure after a busy day. It shouldn't leave you miserable and upset.

moogster1a · 01/01/2011 12:50

I lost my little girl to SIDS at 10 weeks and I can't believe this could be thought of as entertainment.
I know EE's has all sorts of miserable storylines but the death of a baby is the most horrific thing you can imagine. Not the sort of thing to use as misery porn in the early evening.

Chil1234 · 01/01/2011 12:57

In the 20-odd years it's been around EE has had at least one mercy killing, murders galore, many freakishly fatal accidents, suicides, child abuse, arson, rape, mental illness, alcoholism .... and those affect a lot of people horrifically and personally as well. Why is this any worse?

MsKLo · 01/01/2011 12:58

I am so sorry moogster for your loss

working9while5 · 01/01/2011 13:03

Chil1234: it is worse because the snatching element is unrealistic and plays into a stereotype of bereaved parents as crazed.

It is also, IMO, worse than any of the things you just mentioned. It is the ultimate horror for most parents, and parents who have experienced it seem to agree even when they have experienced some of other things you mention.

I am deeply sorry for all the losses experienced by posters here.

heymango · 01/01/2011 13:13

YANBU

I stopped watching it as soon as I heard this storyline was coming up - I know it's fiction but I find it totally distasteful, so I will vote with my feet, so to speak.

I'm so sorry to those of you who have been through this.

deemented · 01/01/2011 13:24

Not only is it distasteful in the extreme, it's also very badly acted. Nothing short of a crass shambles.

ZacknJakesMuma · 01/01/2011 15:01

I was totally shocked and upset by last nights episode of EE. I wasn't aware of the storyline beforehand (have two very young kids so not much time for such things) and so sat down to watch unaware. I have very close family who lost a baby of the same name to cot death and just hope and pray they weren't watching. The whole 'mum goes berserk' line was riduculous, as was the idea that any old baby would do to replace hers. Horribly insensitive, unnecessary and upsetting viewing.

For those people shouting 'It's fiction!'- yes we know but fictional stories can be in very bad taste and for those who have been through a real life trauma can still bring about great emotion and unnecessary upset.

JoBettany · 01/01/2011 15:07

YANBU. I watch Eastenders from time to time but avoided last night's episode because I had read about the storyline. I won't be watching it again until this storyline is 'over'. In reality that probably means I will stop watching altogether.

There are other upsetting storylines but none of them have made me feel like deliberately avoiding the programme. This just feels wrong.

They have lost a lot of viewers over this I think.
