To wonder about New Year messages before New Year?

We have had a couple of messages saying have a good night tonight etc which is fair enough..but also about 10 wishing us a Happy New Year and wondering why people send these before New Year. I know there are often problems texting at midnight but surely tomorrow would make more sense when it actually is New Year? I am grateful for the kind thoughts but don't understand why they are being sent now!

They are suffering from premature congratulations!

penguin73 · 31/12/2010 21:47

Funnily enough I did get one text saying that! Xmas Grin

Happy new year penguin Wink

YABU lol...

witch000 · 31/12/2010 22:15

Hmmm perhaps that's because they never get through at midnight.

or

They will be too drunk to remember.

penguin73 · 31/12/2010 22:24

I know, just wondering why now rather than tomorrow. Not being critical (though that would probably be a fair assumption considering which thread this is!), just curious.

Mobile phone networks go crazy at midnight, so their either sending it while they can, will be too pissed to send at midnight or in bed at midnight.

xstitchfirstfooter · 31/12/2010 22:39

My mum would never let me send a message like that before the bells. She is so superstitious that she believes that if you did that you wouldn't see the bells.

If you receive a message before midnight the sender looks as if they have thought about you. If you receive the message after midnight it looks like they forgot.Grin

charliesmommy · 31/12/2010 22:47

Its already midnight somewhere in the world anyway!

clairefromsteps · 31/12/2010 22:58

Just had a message from my mum and dad, who are out getting spangled with their mates. We told them we would be unlikely to make it to midnight before crashing, so they are only following orders.

I'm about to go and get my PJs on and will be turning my phone off at the same time so as not to be woken up later. I'm such a mizog....

YABU and grumpy. Do you wait until Christmas Day to wish people Happy Christmas?

penguin73 · 31/12/2010 23:06

Err, yes...prior to that I say "I hope you have a nice Christmas" - or words to that effect.

And not grumpy (have said I do appreciate the thought), just curious.

YABU from a logical point of view - they're wishing that you have a happy new year, that doesn't require that the new year has started.

YABU from a societies custom point of view - people are happy to wish you HNY before midnight on new years eve. Tomorrow it could be too late, your new year might already be rubbish.

I'm someone who won't celebrate a birthday before the day for xstitchfirstfooter's reasons of bad luck, but HNY is not a greeting that requires it to be the new year.

penguin73 · 31/12/2010 23:12

Different interpretations I s'pose....for me Happy New Year is a similar thing to 'Happy birthday' ie it's your birthday/it's a new year, hope it's happy in which case it would make sense that it actually is your birthday/ a new year before you say it.

Maybe I'm over-thinking this!

When people say Happy New Year they are saying "I hope you have a Happy New Year!" but I guess the "I hope you have" bit is too clumsy. I think you ARE overthinking it!

Happy New Year.
