To think that Playmobil is a bit......well, shit really?

So, I was a complete Playmobil virgin until christmas day, I had held off buying it for about 2 years as my eldest was only 3 then, but now at 5 she has been going on about it, and my friends buy it for their much younger children, and love it, have seen threads on here where people rave about it and say it lasts forever and gives hours of fun...so into the world of playmobil I plunged....

Now despite being initially reluctant to start with it, I admit I got sucked in and ended up getting ds (18 months) the dump truck, I just superglued the hat to the drivers head and tools into his toolbox to avoid any christmas day A&E trips due to swallowing, I got dd2 (3) the campervan, and ghost pirate ship, and dd1 (5) the african animal ranch and ranger truck, now what I didnt expect was needing a sodding degree in engineering to assemble the bastard things, AN HOUR I spent just on the dump truck!! I have still not had the courage to even open the pirate ship.

My next complaint, its cheap and flimsy, and falls apart every time its so much as looked at, and I think most of the tiny bits are already residing inside the hoover, I mean, WHY so many bits? I have stuck some together, but really not having any luck with it, am I missing some playmobil golden rule? Or do all the Playmobil enthusiasts on here just have it as ornaments, or do you all have super careful children that dont eat tiny cups and stick tiny cutlery up their noses, are my kids a bit young? (I know ds is but his truck isnt a problem) I WANT to like it I really do, I had hoped that by starting them off on these smaller sets I could get the house/hospital/school for their upcoming birthdays, but dont think i'll be getting anymore at the min....

Well all my dgc love it and re longevity I still have some early playmobil-hospital and some cowboys that are well over 30yrs old and belonged to my dgc.My dgs4 loves the camper van,the bin lorry, the rescue helicopter etc however at 22months his brother is of course much too young for it.

Aims80 · 30/12/2010 18:19

I've still got all of our playmobil from when we were kids in the loft at my parents. Best toys ever, we all loved them.

Has she quality changed dramatically then?

toeragsnotriches · 30/12/2010 18:42

I love it but I've had to go through the 'oh no I've lost the small thing that goes there' issues. We've bought more different sets now and it's all interchangeable. It is a nightmare with floorboards though. Also got most of ours on ebay. About a third of the price. The kids don't care!

TaperJeanGirl · 30/12/2010 18:43

his thread has confirmed what I thought, it helps with assembly if you are an engineer! I think I am going to save the pirate ship tbh, I can see just from the box that there are such things as gold coins....I will keep the ranch and campervan as they are already put together and they do love the idea of it, but I have told them its a toy to be played with only when the baby is asleep, i'm just going to have to relax over the bits going missing I think, def wont be getting the huge sets for their birthdays this year though Sad

Playmobil is fantastic . . . but then my DH loves spending ages setting it all up and fiddling about with the little bits. I think it's a great toy for little imaginations.

ChoudeBruxelles · 30/12/2010 19:09

I love playmobil - so does DS, who's 4. He's had the pirate ship for about 2 years and now had the dinosaurs stuff and medieval castle. None of it has broken and he'll play with it for hours. There's also loads 2nd hand on ebay.

Lamorna · 30/12/2010 19:15

I think it was wonderful and my DCs had hours of fun with it.

southeastastra · 30/12/2010 19:16

i had the cavalry and used to play for hours with the little bombs and cannons Grin must have been about 10 - save it until they're older to appreciate it but don't write it off totally

orangepoo · 30/12/2010 19:29

DS has a boat with people and furniture and I thought it was not particularly well made. Small bits of loose plastic from being made were over the boat so I had to get those off before making it. Having made it, DS (nearly 5) has a reasonable amount of fun with it so overall it is OK, but I won't be rushing to buy more.

I agree. 4 year old was given the pirate ship for christmas. Total nightmare to assemble, way too many tiny bits, really flimsy, would make a better ornament than a toy, basically, we won't be buying anymore!

southeastastra · 30/12/2010 20:08

you're all buying it for children that are way too young Confused

Megletitsnow · 30/12/2010 20:10

YANBU.

DS (4) was given Playmobil for his birthday. It was taken out of the box, I looked at the tiny pieces, I looked at 2yo DD.......... and the Playmobil is in storage at grandmas for a couple of years. Those tiny pieces won't last 5 mins in our house.

Goblinchild · 30/12/2010 20:11

That doesn't make it shit though, just inappropriate for a little one.
You wouldn't give the 2 year old a DS would you?

Paradis · 30/12/2010 20:12

My 10 yo loves it, but when she was 4 she had more of the wooden toys - farm/pirate ship etc...

I always make it as soon as we get it or the pieces seem to get lost or I can't face it... And have given up keeping it sep in boxes, is all in one giant box. Cross-pollination!

Paradis · 30/12/2010 20:13

Agree w SEA and Goblin btw... just put it away for a few years...

IwishIcouldmeetSanta · 30/12/2010 20:49

DS1 is 5 and he loves the vehicles - police car, bin lorry, bus and rescue boats.

We Santa got him the fire engine with the remote control kit for Christmas and it is brilliant. The RC kit can be transferred into different vehicles too.

The fiddly bits have all been put in a box out of the way for now. Plenty of time for those as he as his brother get older.

Don't dismiss it totally yet op, your Playmobil time will come!

southeastastra · 30/12/2010 20:52

blimey i hope sobits hasn't seen this thread

southeastastra · 30/12/2010 20:52

normantheforeman would have a fit

Fernie3 · 30/12/2010 20:58

I got my 6 year old a treasure chest thingy with a king and queen - we had so much fun on christmas day arranging all the bits in different ways ( wedding, party, and princess playroom were highlights) my daughter loved it especially the way you could change the hair and put the parrot to sit on things.

My nearly two year old ate a tiny dinner plate so i think love of playmobil really depends on age. I am a bit worried about them losing all the prices but so far sl good,

babymutha · 04/01/2011 00:38

yanbu - I bought a 2nd hand modern dolls house for DD3 on ebay. It's over £100 new and I would be LIVID if I'd paid that much because although it looks great as soon as DD starts playing with it, bits fall off and have to be fixed. My friends' boys came round the other day and her 5 year old raised it to the ground in about 5 minutes flat - there are still vitally important bits that they pinged off somewhere in DDs bedroom and I can't find. I love playmobil, and all the little bits and pieces - but a dolls house that breaks all the time is not my idea of a great toy - I wanted to leave her happily constructing mini-worlds while I got on and did things, not constantly reconstructing walls and bit of roof that have come off in her hand.

StartingAfresh · 04/01/2011 00:49

'the Sylvanians are currently taking a trip in the Priate Ship'

Yeah, - well Upsy Daisy and Iggle Piggle are in DS' Pirate Ship!

MsKLo · 04/01/2011 06:58

What about duplo? ( I think that's what it is called )

Any good?

Chandon · 04/01/2011 09:39

I think they need to be at least 4.

My DS got the (old style) pirate ship when he was 4.

The canons shoot real canon balls! The ship, once assembled is indestructible. It can float in the bath!

It has been The.Best.Toy. ever. and 3 yrs later still going strong.

You need to choose wisely I think, it can be hit and miss.

Plane (big one) great too.

Also excellent customer service. We once lost a few (essential) pieces, I e-mailed them, and they sent me some spares free of charge!
