To think this woman was being way to precious! (wince)

Was in boots today, it has 2 floors.
Woman went upstairs with baby in her buggy on the esculator as lift was broken.

She then asked if she could get someone ( member of staff ) to help her take the buggy down.

Staff told her she was more than welcome to use the staff lift, this was refused because " the staff lift is probably too loud and will wake up my baby "

Most of the staff in that i could see were a bit older, ( 45-50's ) and didn't look up to safely carrying a big buggy down 3 flights of stairs.

Thing is she had another person with her, presumably her DP, but obviously not sure.

I left before they came to an agreement, but it looked like boots staff were not going to do it.

AIBU in thinking the customer was being a little bit weird and precious ( hate the term, but seems apt )

How does she know the staff lift is loud? and why can't she go down the esculator ( not that you should really ) when she came up it perfectly fine!?

Im not bothered personally, each to their own, but felt a bit sorry for whoever was supposed to help her out.
Someone must of relented and done the job.

jamie lee-more holow laughter at being 43 and expecting baby no 5 in 4 wks, what will i do if a lift breaks and im "not up to"carrying my buggy?

Mowiol · 29/12/2010 17:27

Was she asking staff to carry the buggy with baby in it?
If, so then that's quite risky if they tripped or stumbled. I'd imagine that would be a litigation waiting to happen.
She should, perhaps, have planned better!

Manorjane, I really cam crap at guessing ages, thought a college was in her late 30's and turned out she was 23! Blush, thats how crap i am.
They may of not been 45, but i would definately move on the bus to let them sit down IYKWIM, so i have no idea what age bracket that would make them.
Sorry!

I am not making any comment at all on your ability to judge ages. It's just that you suggested that somebody of 45-50 would not be able to help carrying a buggy. Very odd

MumNWLondon · 29/12/2010 17:36

WTF.

She knew the lift was broken yet she went up in the escalator. But wasn't prepared to go down the escalator nor have her DP/DH help her carry the buggy down the stairs.

I agree silly to go upstairs in these circumstances.

In terms of health and safety the store should have offered to carry the EMPTY folded buggy down the stairs while she carried the child. They should NOT have agreed to anything else. Yes the baby would have woken up (more likely than staff lift) but they should not have agreed to carry the buggy down.

I would have told her to take said child out of buggy, she could carry it and the other person could take the buggy down the stairs.

Sill cow.

StealthPolarBear · 29/12/2010 17:43

the pushchair could have gone down in the lift, either with the guy with her, or a member of staff, with the baby in or not, depedning on whether the 'noise' excuse was real or covering up her fears

JamieLeeCurtis · 29/12/2010 17:52

Naah - not really offended OTTMumm - I know when you are young 50 can seem a looong way off.

Anyway, back to your OP, I'd say on the surface it sounds odd and precious

OTTMummA · 29/12/2010 18:00

manorjane, maybe its just the 45-50 yr olds i know that wouldn't be willing to hike a massive buggy down the stairs, hell even i can't do it comfortably or confidantly.

I am sure there are many 45-50 yr olds who are in much better shape than me, i was wrong to make the assumption i did.
I apologise.

To be fair, I have gone up on the escalator when the lift was broken without any real thought as to how to get down again! In my defence it was the width of the pram wheels that were going to cause a problem going down which I hadn't realised till it was too late. I was more than happy to be shown to the goods lift though and I didn't make the same mistake again!
