To want this tattoo?

Bit of background-I'm not normally into tattoos but my auntie died in august (cancer, she was 47) and I wanted to have something as a tribute to her-my cousins got 'mum' tattooed before she died and she loved it.

I was thinking of 8,3,1 which is in a take that song (and also, I'm told, a universally known meaning?)

Do you know what that means (eight letters, three words one meaning, ie I love you) and is it naff?

no didn't know

yes it's naff IMO

Panzee · 27/12/2010 20:13

If you don't know what it means now, is it really meaningful enough to you to have it permanently added to your body?

If you want a tattoo as a tribute, make it something that means something to you now, e.g. her favourite flower/bird perhaps.

AVeryMerryPersonalClown · 27/12/2010 20:13

Who cares if it is naff?

If it has meaning for you and you want it, Sod the buggers that judge.

(I'm channelling my 'I don't care what you think New years resolution')

AlrightStill · 27/12/2010 20:14

i think its a bit naff but at the end of the day its your body and you can tattoo whatever the hell you want on it.

activate · 27/12/2010 20:16

yes but break it down

8 letters, three words, one meaning as a phrase means fuck all

after all I hate you has 8 letters, three words, 1 meaning too

just because it's in a take that song doesn't make it a universally known meaning -perhaps it was invented for the song?

oneortwo · 27/12/2010 20:16

was your aunt a big take that fan?

Actuallawyer · 27/12/2010 20:17

I wouldn't bother asking on here. Tattoos are very personal and tend to get a marmite reaction. I would always advise getting them done on a discrete part of the body so you have a choice of whether people can see it.

moondog · 27/12/2010 20:18

You are fucking joking aren't you?
Jesus is no sentiment considered real anymore unless emblazoned on a body or 'articulated' by a pop group?

Tootlesmummy · 27/12/2010 20:18

I would avoid a tattoo but that's just because I dislike them, but if you were set on it I would try and find an alternative.

AVeryMerryPersonalClown · 27/12/2010 20:18

Now THAT I agree with. I have 4 tattoos, getting larger every time.
I have them on my back so the choice is mine if I want them to be seen.

moondog · 27/12/2010 20:18

discreet

'Discrete means separate.

activate · 27/12/2010 20:18

googling provides Lisa Stanfield song not take that (love as in romantic love) www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/l/lisa_stansfield/8_3_1.html

GandalfyCarawak · 27/12/2010 20:19

Didn't know about it. A bit naff but so are my tattoos, and I love them :)

Maybe you could think of something your aunt liked particularly- Maybe she wouldn't have known the meaning either???? A particular flower, a tree, an animal even???

If you want it, you should get it... Tattoos are very personal.

Hope you're okay after losing your aunt.

custardismyhamster · 27/12/2010 20:19

I told a friend of mine and he immediately told me the meaning-I then read a magazine article about a bloke who met a woman in the war and called her 831 for that reason-so it's not invented for the take that song.

I know the meaning Panzee just wondered if others did (as I didn't till I heard the song and wouldnt have got it instantly)

it was the last thing I said to her-though I think it was the last thing any of us did we all said the same!

I wanted it more when it wasn't obvious what it meant-something for just me maybe

Panzee · 27/12/2010 20:20

Oh I see - if it's special to you then go for it! I like tattoos that are really personal. I'm really sorry to hear about your aunt.

GandalfyCarawak · 27/12/2010 20:21

In that case, I do think it's nice, seeing as it was the last thing you said to her.

said · 27/12/2010 20:21

No idea what it means

All tattoos look naff

Yhe poor woman probably felt she had to say she loved the 'Mum' tattoos

bibbitybobbitysantahat · 27/12/2010 20:21

Naffer than naffy the naff-bear on a particularly naff day.

You are considering getting something you don't know the meaning of tattooed onto your body in memory of your aunt?

Dear God!

SixtyFootDoll · 27/12/2010 20:21

All tattoos are naff
If I saw 831 on someone I would think it was there bus number.

Sorry about your aunt, but I dont like tattoos

custardismyhamster · 27/12/2010 20:22

I was thinking back of my neck so cannot be seen unless my hair is up-I wouldnt ever want one on show all the time.

Lisa Stansfield probably did do it first the take that song I'm thinking of is on their new album-so it's definately been done before.

Thanks all that answered what i wanted to know-it's naff and been done before so I shall think of something else. I'm unsure what Jesus has to do with it though-maybe a bit thick!

OP posts:
moondog · 27/12/2010 20:23

Why don't you get..ooh I don;t know, Mandarin figures meaning 'The special one' and butterflies dancing around a flower?
Hmm

said · 27/12/2010 20:23

Oh god, now I've just read the "meaning" it's even more naff

ShanahansRevenge · 27/12/2010 20:25

I don't think you should feel the need to ask if it's ok...if you've given it proper thought to the design it shouldn't matter what any bugger on here thinks!

oneortwo · 27/12/2010 20:26

"I then read a magazine article about a bloke who met a woman in the war and called her 831" if I met a man who gave me a NUMBER he would be booted out the door Shock

Panzee · 27/12/2010 20:27

Pretty impressive to be number 831 though. Maybe he was blessed...
