spelling matters; but how much? I tend to use words I can spell and only occasionally use dictionaries On mumsnet I dont bother too much....research shows people have no difficulty in reaDING mispelt words. TEACHERS?I gather they are split on how important spelling is. think it matters, but is not a killer question Partly because some english spelling lacks logic.

phonics teaching in schools I could not make muchof it.

Bizarrely I have found teaching phonics to my DC has helped me. I rely heavily on sentence context to decipher word meanings so I know what the word means but cannot pronounce it so decoding skills help there a lot.

Though I now think the alphabet is insane - two letters the same c,k. A letter that can not make a sound by itself q but needs another letter qu. Names and sounds both being used - multiple ways of saying same sounds like ow which can be ou or oa.

mas I am not against using any aid. I was just pointing out the I tend to write words I Can spell. I have heard it said that somepeople know a thousand words and others 30 thousand....frankly language is not impoortand to many people. Listen to top footballers in interview. they have been coached cliches..

I must admit my spelling and grammar gets a little sloppy. And it is churlish to pick up on people's mistakes on a thread.
I think you can have lower standards with regards to such things especially on a fast moving thread - as long as what you type can be read.
But not too much lower otherwise you might think you are on Netmums.

Being dyslexic that is not always an option for me and in my experience people make judgments on language used - social background, educational background or intelligence which can be important in some settings.

I did not think any one listened to footballers - they are paid to be watched really.
