very trivial ongoing thing in my household

I always want the TV volume turned down, Husband and kids always want it turned up. No one in the household is hard of hearing. I really dislike the TV on loud! ( it's loud to me but seemingly not to them)
I often leave them all to it and leave the room to read a book in the bedroom,

Is this a common problem?

It's trivial but it gets me down. I seem to be surrounded by a racket all the time at home Sad

YANBU. I relish the silence when no one is home (very seldom). DH will have the tv on for the sake of having it on. Even DS switches it off when he is finished watching.

And as for having it blaring all the time: that would drive me insane. Fortunately DH and DS and I are in agreement with this.

Good luck.....................

mumcanihavearabbit · 24/12/2010 18:34

Just had the same conversation with my DH, he said its not loud, but I think it really is!

jasper · 24/12/2010 18:36

Thanks . They are currently watching some Narnia film.

Whenever the music comes on it is unbearably loud, and they have now decided there is something wrong with my ears!

YANBU.

I always turn the tv down, when it's just me watching.

I've even been known to turn the sound of completely and have the subtitles on as I can't bare all the background noise they have on programmes so I can't hear what being said.

jasper · 24/12/2010 18:37

I have wondered if this is a male/female thing in the past.

jasper · 24/12/2010 18:38

lizzie, thanks. I do that too.
Mumcanihavearabbit, that conversation is replayed in my house daily

LutyensInTinsel · 24/12/2010 18:44

Lizzie I do that too! I really can't bear the volume up high, it drives me nuts. No one else agrees with me...I'm officially the nutter in our house Hmm

beingsetup · 24/12/2010 18:47

YANBU. My kids do it too and it's horrible! They do turn it down if asked though Smile

IAmReallyFabNow · 24/12/2010 18:48

I'm the one that needs it louder than any one else but atm I have a headache so don't like any noise.

MeowyChristmasEveryone · 24/12/2010 18:49

Is it not possible to sort the seating in your lounge to everyone's satisfaction?

I know that's easy to say - our living room is about 3m sq - hardly enough room for us even WITHOUT any furniture.

I'm sure this is something that you have tried but when I lived at home, my mum would always sit nearest the tv, because the chair she preferred was there, and then she would complain about exactly the same thing. To make it worse, my dad likes sic-fi, Star Trek and so on so there is ALWAYS lots of action, noise, music, drama and so on.

jasper · 24/12/2010 18:51

meow I already sit furthest from the TV Sad

I am quite fussy and only like it on a certain level. When it gets too loud I find it seems to distort the sound and I can't make out what's being said at all - I often used to find this when watching films at school. I do find it physically uncomfortable before it gets to this point though.

Pantofino · 24/12/2010 18:55

I hate the tv. It is ALWAYS on in our house. I only like it when there is something I want to watch on, which seems to be never. I record stuff and watch it when dh is away.

atswimtwolengths · 24/12/2010 20:31

It's not a trivial matter though, is it? It's an assault on your senses to have the tv blaring out. At least if they wanted it quieter than you, you could have subtitles on.

I insist on having the Mute button pressed for adverts - I can't bear the way they suddenly increase the sound. My children think I'm mad - they don't notice at all.

AnnOnimous · 24/12/2010 20:33

I love the sound of silence too, and often use the bedroom as a second living room to get total peace.

mistletoekisses · 24/12/2010 21:02

YANBU.

Would drive me mad, my DB has his TV on constantly. I breathe a sigh of relief whenever I leave his. We rarely have the TV on in our house....thank goodness.

Don't get me started on the increased volume on adverts...weren't they going to make it illegal to change the volumes by such an amount?

clam · 24/12/2010 21:05

DH and I have this debate. I say "it's too loud." He says, "no it's not, it's only on 19." So I say, "I don't care what it says it's on, it's too loud for me.

Compromise.

ratspeakeratsolstice · 24/12/2010 21:21

TV ads are definitly too loud

Not being silly or anything but have you thought about trying ear plugs
I've got a squishy foam pair for concerts/gigs. They help filter out the worst of the noise but still make conversation possible.

Lardycake · 24/12/2010 22:32

Why should she be the one to wear earplugs? I think it's uncivilised to have the TV on very loud and to be so inconsiderate that it is making someone's life so uncomfortable. Who is in charge in this household - you or your children? Talk it over quietly with your partner when you are alone and make it clear to him that you find it unbearable. If he still takes no notice, go out and buy some superglue.

jasper · 24/12/2010 23:09

Ahh, I knew y'all would not disappoint Smile

I am in some way comforted to know I am not alone.

I think what gets me is that I ask dh if he would please turn down the volume (politely, honestly) he gets really narked at me and goes into a bad mood as if I am an old nag.

rats I have considered earplugs but I know this would piss dh off. he would see it as being an aggressive (passive aggressive? Oh dear I'm stuffed, aren't I?) . I already wear them in bed because he breathes so loudly in his sleep.

Same argument in our house. Anything over 40 really grates on my ear (plus you can still hear every word when you are upstairs) but DH thinks it's fine. He likes the full cinema surround sound experience!

sockapoodle · 25/12/2010 20:32

YADNBU! I can't stand loud tv, it gets inside my brain and hurts I tell you. AND why do the adverts come on extra loud?? Sob

Ephiny · 25/12/2010 20:39

YANBU, I don't like it on too loud. DP has some wireless headphones which he uses for watching tv after I've gone to bed or if I'm studying or something, that way he can have it turned up as loud as he likes without annoying me.

I wear earplugs in bed too because of that annoying breathing, I thought that was just me :)
