To think Yorkshire Pudding with a (turkey) Christmas dinner is just plain wrong?

Yorkshires are for beef! Why does every menu include them?

OP posts:
ilovesprouts · 23/12/2010 21:03

YABU sorry we always had yorkshires with any roast dinner, without them it's just not a roast.

DrSeuss · 23/12/2010 21:40

Here in the North East, Yorkshires go with all meats, the old phrase being, "Them as eats most pudding gets most meat," the point being that there wasn't much meat so you filled up on the puddings. My mother always served them with any roast. Many people here serve them with gravy as a starter, hence the old phrase.

WanderingInAWinterWonderland · 23/12/2010 21:46

YABU! I was gutted once when I got a roast turkey dinner in a pub and there was no Yorkshire pud! My sister pointed out that they're only supposed to be with beef (I was only young).

WanderingInAWinterWonderland · 23/12/2010 21:49

Agree with UsualSuspect actually! DH always wants peas and sweetcorn on his Christmas dinner, which is odd. Parsnips, sprouts, carrots, potatoes yes but peas and sweetcorn is a bit Xmas Hmm.

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/12/2010 23:07

you HAVE to have a yorkie with EVERY roast Xmas Grin

FaffTastic · 23/12/2010 23:14

YYYYYABU

I would eat yorkshire puddings with anything and everything if I could

FellatioNelson · 23/12/2010 23:28

Yes it's wrong. Very wrong. OK if not with beef for an average Sunday but no place for Yorkshire Pud on Christmas day. Unless having beef. But that is also very wrong. Some people just have no idea how to behave in a civilised fashion. Grin

HarlotOTara · 23/12/2010 23:30

YABU - who cares? Eat whatever you like, I always have bread sauce on Christmas day and usually have beef - so what?

usualsuspect · 23/12/2010 23:34

I have beef and turkey Grin I'm not sure if thats civilised or not ..Jamie ,Heston and Hugh are all about the goose this year though..not sure about Delia and Nigella though

FellatioNelson · 23/12/2010 23:35

I've been wondering whether I can bring myself to allow peas. I'll do sprouts, braised spiced red cabbage, parsnips and carrots, but my DCs will probably only eat the carrots, and I can't be bothered to do any other veg that involves hard work/peeling etc.

No-one in my family has ever bothered with bread sauce but I quite like the sound of it. Shall I make some or is it vile?

HarlotOTara · 23/12/2010 23:38

Fellatio, I love bread sauce but only have it at Christmas, having goose this year but in the big scheme of things what does it matter who eats what with what

midlandsmumof4 · 23/12/2010 23:42

My lot love yorkshires with any meat. We will be having turkey & pork. They love mint sauce so this will be served as well. It's Christmas. Really just an extra special Sunday lunch.......so I'll serve all their favourites.

ChippingIn · 23/12/2010 23:59

Home made are obviously the BEST - but if someone else is making them I'll 'suffer' through pre-made batter mixes, Aunt Bessies or Uncle Georges Grin Yorkshires of course!!

Peas - many kinds of wrongness on a roast Christmas dinner.... but who cares, if that's what they want who cares - it's meant to be YUMMMMMYYY not 'right' :)

PlonkerForLifeNotJustChristmas · 24/12/2010 00:04

YAB completely U!

Yorkshire pudding (and mint sauce ) go with every roast ...

mogwhistle · 24/12/2010 00:24

I am Yorkshire and proud! We only have chicken on Sundays (due to picky DC) but we always have yorkie puds and will have them on Christmas day with the turkey too Xmas Grin

midlandsmumof4 · 24/12/2010 00:31

mycomment · 24/12/2010 00:52

yanbu. everyone who disagrees is being vvvu.

Fibilou · 24/12/2010 00:55

Nowt wrong with a nice yorkshire. I'd happily eat them with anything, fish and chips, whatever. I love them!

Fibilou · 24/12/2010 00:56

Oh and I am about as Southern as it gets - I'm from Eastbourne !

Fibilou · 24/12/2010 00:57

Usualsuspect, Delia's not about the goose because goose is disgusting and she has a good handle on what people want to eat. it's all very well these poncy chefs going on about geese but I suspect they won't be making them at home because NOBODY WANTS TO EAT IT !!

Blackletterday · 24/12/2010 01:59

Yorkshires are my dp's nemesis (he does the cooking) he has finally mastered dumplings, but these defeat him, poor lamb Grin.

We have them with every roast, in what way do they not complement poultry? We even had mint sauce with chicken growing up Shock

HalfTermHero · 24/12/2010 02:05

It is a very Northern thing to do. Your true Northerner would throw xmas dinner on the floor in sheer disgust if a pudding was not served with it. I have come to accept the demand as I love my dh Xmas Smile

Tortington · 24/12/2010 02:18

we have turkey and beef anyway. and sausages
