not to collect this underpaid item?

wannaBe · 23/12/2010 12:41

Had a card through the door to say that an item has been underpaid by over £3 and I need to collect it from local royal mail depo.

The last time that happened it turned out to be some junk mail Shock and I paid money for the privilage of binning it.

I am not expecting anything, the only delivery I am expecting is from amazon and is lost with city link somewhere and besides amazon wouldn't be overpaid.

so ibu to just throw the card away and forget about it?

TBH after being stuck in the house with snow/sick children/sick me/wrapping presents etc. I'd be thrilled to pay £3 to put a bit of excitement and suspense in my life.

SkyBluePearl · 23/12/2010 14:00

i had this too but rang and asked if sender details were on the back/also the postmark. Then decided not to collect as it was an over sized birthday card from my SIL and the 40 min round drive put me off.

Another time it happened i asked to see the parcel before deciding not to pay.

I recon your 3 pounds postage is a small package not a card though. Small parcels don't have to be sent through the post office - you can just stick a few stamps on them and shove them in the post box.

how can you not be bursting with nosiness??? I have to know... let's all chip in Grin

This has only happened to me once. It turned out to be a cheque for £100!

It was from PIL who we only speak to about once a year so they didn't tell us it was coming and wouldn't have asked us if we'd got it or anything.

It was money they owed dh that we'd forgotton about.

(we did phone and say thank you)

I'm never bothering again to collect anything underpaid!! I went to the sorting office to collect a letter around about last August. The man in the sorting office had a look at the letter and said it was half franked by the council and it was up to me whether I wanted it or not. Thinking it might be something really really important to do with dd starting nursery in September I forked out £1.50 only to open it and find a planning questionnaire!

GodRestYeMerryMummyLin · 23/12/2010 15:05

i also have to pay for a "red letter" £1.19p i was going to leave it ,but my curiosity wont let me so i will pay and collect it.

dustycups · 23/12/2010 15:11

please go get it, i neeeeeeeed to know what it is!

leftangle · 23/12/2010 15:16

WE send out questionnaires from our office and have occasionally managed to send them under franked. Not surprisingly we get irate calls from people who have paid and queued for a questionnaire. However we do apologies and refund the money.

Having said that it wouldn't be as much as £3 - must be something heavy.

MissAnneElk · 23/12/2010 15:26

My curiousity would make me pick it up. As others have said you can look at it beforehand.
A couple of years ago one of the neighbours children was posting letters to all the other kids in the street without putting stamps on obviously! Quite a few disgruntled parents at the sorting office.
Our sorting office is only open in the morning, so do check in case you feel bullied into going now. Grin

starfishmummy · 23/12/2010 15:27

Sounds like a small parcel rather than a letter which would be unusual for junk mail. When i had a letter which needed payment the guy at the sorting office was perfectly happy for me to have a quick look first (outright be different if they are very busy)

TheMonster · 23/12/2010 15:30

Go and get it! I want to know what it is.

electra · 23/12/2010 15:33

This happened to me and I also did not want to pick it up. My reasoning was that it could have been anything. If a relative sent it the item will be returned to them and then surely they will realise their mistake?

I've stopped responding to them since Virgin Active mail dropped my entire road without stamps. I handed it in and the man said "You don't want it".

No one sends me letters, they're all official or junk. I might think differently though around Christmas or birthdays. Apparantly it's easy and fairly common to throw a whole pile in the postbox at Christmas without them all being stamped and even some that just have a first name on them.

splashy · 23/12/2010 16:14

Its also not true you can only send parcels with correct postage!!

Many POs allow you to stick the parcel yourself in the sack. They may have weighed it themselves at home on innacurate scales.

I would, cos you never know.

Also agree that at 3 pounds its very unlikely to be junk mail.

GodRestYeMerryMummyLin · 24/12/2010 13:48

i had to get mine .Dh has just been to collect it and pay and its from my brother so he owes me !

Summerbird73 · 24/12/2010 14:48

another one sitting on her hands here wanting to know what it is! we had to collect one this week - twas a xmas card from my mum with no stamp on it - but still i reckon £2 is def more than junk mail

BrandyButterPie · 24/12/2010 14:52

just pop online, pay the extyra and get it delivered, if it is anything not worth it, shout at whoever sent it Grin

Could Shitty-Link just have dumped your Amazon order in a postbox ?

I think they could have... they are wankers of the very highest order.Xmas Grin

Only yesterday, saw a Shitty-Link driver leg it in his van as customer ran out shouting and waving him back.
