I will be 16 weeks and 1 day pregnant on Christmas day and thought it would be nice to toast Christmas with half a glass of champers. Would this be hugely irrisponsible?

A serious AIBU here, if you tell me I am I will totally stick to the san pelligrino.

Thanks and merry christmas!

Enjoy it while you can, in a few weeks alcohol will give you wicked heartburn :(

smellmycheese · 22/12/2010 12:49

I had a whole bottle of Magners on my birthday when i was 6 months pg. The only adverse effect was being up all night with hearburn! Go for it!

QueenofDreams · 22/12/2010 12:49

I'll be one day overdue on Christmas day if nothing happens over the next couple of days. I'll deffo have a drink!

wheredoesallthesnotcomefrom · 22/12/2010 12:56

ha!

i only came on this thread to say what eric just said - enjoy it before the heartburn sets in :)

shadycharacter · 22/12/2010 13:00

I'll be 25 weeks and I'll be having a couple of sips, maybe half a glass.
I really wants bucks fizz with my breakfast bagel as per, but I'd rather not waste my "alcohol allowance" on diluted champagne. Hmm, it's a tricky one.
I'll be swigging it in the kitchen away from prying eyes though, couldn't sit at the table with everyone and drink it, I'd feel so norty! Shock

Are you going to have a glass on new years as well?

pinkteddy · 22/12/2010 13:03

When I was pregnant and on holiday in Spain, the waiters kept giving me complimentary vino and pate and toast with every evening meal. When I explained I couldn't eat or drink either as I was pregnant they would look at me with total incomprehension! Obviously bit different from their UK counterparts given perfectstorm's tale!!

Anyway I say drink the champagne!

perfectstorm · 22/12/2010 13:42

pinkteddy the weird thing is the wait staff at Midsummer House aren't (or weren't, anyway) English, in fact I think they were French. Yet they very obviously avoided topping my champagne glass up, and then cleared the place setting with very pointed reproach.

They then seemed absolutely thrown by my request that my steak be well done, because I was pregnant.

Bue · 22/12/2010 13:44

Quenelle, that is a midwife after my own heart!

Enjoy your champagne, OP.

LaWeaselMys · 22/12/2010 13:51

I wanted to keep (moderately) drinking through PG, but all booze tasted like vinegar [sob].

NinkyNonker · 22/12/2010 15:05

YANBU

coco2901 · 22/12/2010 15:15

I'll be 23 weeks and I fully intend to have a more OJ than champers bucks fizz in the morning, half a glass of red with my meal and maybe even a weak advocaat snowball later on. I'll be having plenty of food etc and I've had the occassional half glass of wine/champagne (maybe twice a month) throughout my pregnancy... enjoy and merry christmass! xx

Probably a different cultural expectation, like here in Italy, where my doc got a bit shitty with me for not drinking my prescribed glass or red per day "for the blood"

I couldn't drink anything, I felt dreadful as soon as I got a whiff of any alcohol.

Did I ever get it in the neck from Sock Dropper's family at every lunch and dinner we had together, with one hand clamped over my glass and the other over my mouth as I gagged gently. Chiding me for not "thinking of the baby !!"

It might have be psychosomatic, it was after all a shared bottle Chianti that got me pregnant in the first place.

I've barely has so much as a sniff of a the barmaids apron for a decade, just in case of a repeat performance in the fertility department.

ipredicttrouble · 22/12/2010 17:12

Why the heck wouldn't you?

Katey1010 · 22/12/2010 18:15

I now have the world`s most beautiful 3 week old baby and I had about 7 drinks over the course of the pregnancy. I had one glass of wine out on my birthday and the waiter and the barman had a whispered conversation about it before I was served.

Have a glass of champers and enjoy it!

impatient1 · 22/12/2010 18:45

'Everything in moderation' is my MW's advice.
I will be 8w on xmas day, and will be having a weak bucks fizz and a glass of chardonnay with Dinner. I will savour every single sip :D (this will be DC#4, and If i fancied the odd glass, I had it! all my lo's are fine.) Merry Christmas x Xmas Smile

Piccalilli2 · 22/12/2010 18:50

Oh definitely have it. One glass won't hurt. Mind you, I told myself I was allowed one glass on my 30th birthday when pregnant with dd1, bought nice stuff as well so it was worth it, and it tasted terrible. I only had a sip in the end. Such a waste. I was only 8 weeks then though. I subsequently had a small glass of red wine once a week on a Friday with both dd1 and dd2.

coolascucumber · 22/12/2010 20:18

We saved our pregnancy test for Christmas morning with our first child, not expecting it to be positive - but it was! (14 years ago now).

We downed a bottle of Champagne in shock then realised I probably shouldn't have had my half....child turned out OK, no more or less stupid than the other 2 who I was a bit more careful with.

For those in fear of heartburn can I recommend a touch of cassis to add a little sweetener and calm the bubbles.

5Foot5 · 22/12/2010 20:23

Definitely have it and don't worry.

When I was 16 weeks with DD we were on holiday in France. I allowed myself one glass of wine a day while we were there.

Needless to say she turned out fine.

2rebecca · 22/12/2010 23:05

I'd have a whole one.

NellieForbush · 22/12/2010 23:09

I would have 2.

JJ17 · 22/12/2010 23:32

Oh balls have 2 glasses - have a couple of fags too!

I think you can have a couple of weak drinks a week and a fag here and there.

It's just about not being a complete alkie or crack ho.
