to expect retailers NOT to be clearing Christmas stock 5 days BEFORE Christmas?

What is going on. Half price clearance sales already? Shops have sold out of most stuff when I'm just wanting to buy it. Angry

I have no wish to abide by the retail calendar, which puts Easter in January and Christmas in October. I wish to shop for Christmas in December. Can anyone explain this madness?

If I thought it would make the blindest bit of difference, I most certainly would. Perhaps everyone thinks the same and that's why they get away with being so crap. Or perhaps I am just particularly grumpy. Who knows.

well better than gurning on mn

FellatioNelson · 22/12/2010 00:37

I hate this. I hate it that when I want to buy a swimsuit or a 'holiday' dress in July I can't, because they've cleared the shelves ready for winter stock. Angry

gaelicsheep · 22/12/2010 00:37

Well do feel free to avoid the gurners in the AIBU topic if it bothers you that much.

Brilliant! I need to get to a Tesco quick and snap it up.

All those people who buy it hte week off are muppets - look at them all, nae parcels getting through their Christmas is bollocked.

The early bird gets the worm!

Bring it on, I say!

expatinscotland · 22/12/2010 00:38

the week of, that is.

scottishmummy · 22/12/2010 00:39

i knew what you meant

expatinscotland · 22/12/2010 00:40

Mothercare is minging, anyhoo.

I have finally, after many years, run out of a Christmas wrap.

Well, I ran out over a week ago when I wrapped one of the last gifts.

Have been waiting to pounce in a sale.

I have only one day left to get to civilisation from the deep teuch and snap up a bargain.

What a grand excuse!

Excellent.

scottishmummy · 22/12/2010 00:41

i buy sale stuff in pre xmas sale.snap it up

expatinscotland · 22/12/2010 00:42

Loads of folk mocked me on here, because I start my Christmas shopping in summer. Failing to plan means planning to fail, especially out here.

Now they are all grousing about their delayed parcels and shops running out of trimmings for their Christmas dinners.

Well, there you go.

I'm just glad I happened to stop by here and see this thread so I can hit some sales as I'll not be able to for Boxing Day as DH has to work and nae way I'm going to Glasgow with three bairns on Boxing Day.

scottishmummy · 22/12/2010 00:48

mock being canny, saving yer bawbies?id never do that

gaelicsheep · 22/12/2010 00:48

Glad to be of service.

I don't save those, no, but I had some newspapers and ribbons at least to make do for a few pressies.

I'll be seeing what else I can pick up on the cheap in these sales.

I've been looking at some sites everyday, for their Xmas stock going on sale pre-Xmas so's I can snap it up.

Most people round here do it early because we have to rely on post/deliveries and even then plenty of time they bastards say 'Highland surcharge'.

Oh, no, don't think so. That's you keeping your product then. This is still the mainland.

gaelicsheep · 22/12/2010 00:55

Now that I do agree with. I try never to rely on deliveries for Christmas, or anytime really. Good thing too this year. I'm half an hour outside a city and they tell me I'm not on the Mainland. Idiots.

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 22/12/2010 01:03

We're over an hour from Glasgow but it is still very much the mainland, it is not even bad teuch like Campbeltown or Ft. William, still they try to bollock us and if they are not Scottish or Norn Irish they almost always mispronounce our surname, which is actually said just how it is spelled there is nothing funky about it at all.

BitOfFun · 22/12/2010 01:06

I haven't done any Christmas shopping yet. I think I have a male brain.

FellatioNelson · 22/12/2010 10:32

Christmas Eve is always really quiet in the shops apparently. BOF you'll definitely be the only feamle there anyway!

(I've just had a massive snow avalanche off my roof. Shock. I think that means I might be able to venture out today. If I can remember how to drive and wear proper shoes.)

mozette · 22/12/2010 12:55

Now I really want to know your surname expat!

idlingabout · 22/12/2010 13:13

Whilst I sympathise with you OP I think it worth pointing out that the retailers you mean are all the chain stores and multiples and NOTthe independent shops.
The reason they control stock in the way they do is to keep down costs - they do this to compete on price because (unfortunately) this seems to be the only way in which the vast majority of the general public make their decisions as to where to buy.If you want it cheap then they will continue with these practices.

tyler80 · 22/12/2010 13:47

Can sort of see your point. It drives me mad that they seem to stop selling Christmas trees (real ones) about a week before Christmas. They're Christmas trees not advent trees and I want a proper Norway spruce which isn't just a twig by 12th night which means buying after the 20th

bumperella · 22/12/2010 13:56

I totally agree re: selling out of stuff / discounting items way before Christmas and worse having shops in middle of summer with no summer stuff in them. Is very frustrating as I'm a last minute kinda gal.
However, I want retailers (and every other PLC, except for the deeply unethical ones) to be profitable as I want my pension to be worth something when I retire - they're part of stock exchange so....

FellatioNelson · 23/12/2010 08:14

Does anyone else find it deeply depressing that so many people will be choosing to go shopping on Boxing Day? It's not like we don't have year round sales anyway, is it?Hmm

Have they not had enough shoppping of shops all through December that they can't bear to keep away for more than one single day, and will cut their Christmas in half just to get a cheap crappy skirt in Next? Hmm
