This morning I opened...

"To a dear Sister in Law at Christmas"

Enough said?

We got a Son and DIL one from MIL. It's twee but should I be offended? Xmas Confused

TheMonster · 21/12/2010 17:41

Surely it's an appropriate card if you are her sister in law?

chitchatinsantasear · 21/12/2010 17:44

My inlaws always send one to DS and DDinlaw, doesn't bother me at all, I mean, that's what we are, aren't we???!!! Confused

minipie · 21/12/2010 17:48

YABU and YANBU.

YANBU not to like these cards, I don't like them either (I'd much rather my SIL picked a card I liked rather than one that just happens to say "To a dear Sister in Law")

But, YABU to be judgey - she'd probably love to get one of these cards so her intentions are in the right place. You just have different tastes.

LynetteScavo · 21/12/2010 17:52

MIL always posts one to us, then complains we don't send one back.

Bloody waste of money, if you ask me. They only live 3 miles away.

TheFallenMadonna · 21/12/2010 17:55

Two years in a row, my dad sent me and DH a "to a dear son and daughter in law" card. Two years in a row. HmmGrin

lololizzy · 21/12/2010 18:04

it sounds like she actually made an effort..albeit a tacky one..but maybe she likes receiving that sort of thing?

SantasENormaSnob · 21/12/2010 18:12

WTF Confused

Hulababy · 21/12/2010 18:15

A whole new level of judgemental snobbiness!

Could only ever occur on MN Xmas Grin

SeaTrek · 21/12/2010 18:19

WOW - I had no idea that these cards were...naff Xmas Blush

I guess, in my defense, I only send them to people who send them to me. Apart from Brother and SIL. OMG. What must they think of me? This year I think I sent them a 'to both of you' as I couldn't find a brother/sil one I liked.

LornMowa · 21/12/2010 18:21

These days, most of the cards for sale seem to be very specific. All the children's ones have ages on (apart from the age of child you are trying to buy for) and the adult ones for women are always in sugar pink and denote exactly who they are for. Just occasionally when I find one with an attractive picture on, the inside is inappropriately gushing "to a dear bil" etc which doesn't suit when sending a card from the whole family. I think card companies are hoping that we will be forced to buy more than one card ie one to a dear mum, another to a dear grandma (or in our town Nanna!)

SuePurblybiltbyElves · 21/12/2010 18:29

Nooo, this snobbery has been around for ages. I like the really specific ones "to a dear second-best friend" or "thank-you football referee".In fact, we used to have a competition in my family to send the most random, finally topped by a fake Victorian print of a naked child getting into a bath, finger whimsically on lips, with "to my favourite step-grandfather" in loving gold script.

LuvLee · 21/12/2010 18:29

YABU. You should feel blessed. She took the time to buy you a card, write it up AND send it in time for Chrismas. Nothing wrong with that in my book.

Bue · 21/12/2010 18:42

I'm afraid my MIL and SIL are massively into these cards. I find them cringeworthy but also hilarious, so I rather look forward to receiving them. There is a card for everyone these days - this year SIL sent BIL and his partner "To a Wonderful Brother and His Boyfriend".

Triggles · 21/12/2010 18:45

I have to agree with those that say it's a good thing. After all, it's not just a "out of the box" random card - she selected it especially for you and paid extra for it (as opposed to just one of a box of generic cards). So I would personally be flattered that a relative cared enough to take the time and money to do so.

PerpetuallyAnnoyedByHeadlice · 21/12/2010 18:46

Bue LOL!!

JamieLeeCurtis · 21/12/2010 18:51

Has anyone never told you that It's The Thought That Counts?

ChewyToffeeMum..you're not being snobby but terribly rude. Different things.

OP....you have your ideals mixed up.

ShanahansRevenge · 21/12/2010 19:28

SeaTrek...the cards are not naff...the people who say they are and look down their noses at them are.

ChippingIn · 21/12/2010 19:30

WOW

The things you've done all your life take on a new meaning when you live post on MN.

I think it is LOVELY that people make the effort to choose a card for me and not just pick the next one out of a multi box. I actually get a bit miffed when I get one from family and it doesn't say Daughter/Sister/Auntie/Niece etc - to me it seems like they couldn't be arsed choosing a specific one and I would never buy any of my family a card which didn't say Mum/Dad/Sister etc

swanandduck · 21/12/2010 19:32

YABU. What did you want? Us all to come on here sneering at your SIL's commonness and admiring your for being so classy?? You sound like a pretentious cow. Sorry, but you do.

HobnobHeaven · 21/12/2010 19:49

We got one this morning with 'Dear Grandson and Wife' on the front. Didn't think there'd be a huge market for those cards, but there you go Hmm

APixieInMyMulledWine · 21/12/2010 19:51

I don't get it either/

We got one saying to Son and his Partner on the front. Thought it was quite nice actually.
