my mil couldn't get her car off the drive due to the snowy conditions, so unable to look after the children today.

i fully expected to have lost today wages, but didn't want my boss asking why can't xyz look after the children.

YANBU, none of their damn business. You're an adult and it's your decision what the best arrangement is for your kids.

Why are so many bosses such feckers?

Well, if you presented it in the same way, then I am not surprised he was quizzical!

Is your MIL your childminder? Or nanny? Does she usually pick them up? If so, she cant be taking her job very seriously if she cancels because there is snow. And if you have childcare who does not take the care seriously, maybe you dont take your job seriously? Is maybe what the boss is thinking.

my MIL is my childminder, and this is the 1st time ever i have not gone into work because of childcare issues.

the snow here is bad, none of the cars have left in my street

Hang on QMCP - if there has been a foot of snow and no gritters go anywhere near MILs home, it does not seem reasonable to say "not take seriously".

We don't know the exact conditions, but it seems fair enough that if the OP tells her boss "Sorry, but I cannot get childcare today, so cannot come in." so how is that in some way "quizzical" - she has explained as much as she needs, without going into why xyz is unable to reach her ("in hospital", "was hurt when she fell over", "car broke down" could have been used as alternatives, if the OP had wanted to lie, but she simply didn't explain, perhaps...)

YANBU. I get this from my boss too. Phoned into say DD literally just been sick so can not take her to nursery. His response was "can't your mum have her?" Hmm like I hadn't thought what my options were before I fecking rang him! I don't not go in to work, lose a days pay and get a mark against my name without a very good reason!

QuintMissesChristmasesPast · 21/12/2010 15:31

No, I am just saying, the boss might have thought that.
