I thought baby mattress should always be bought new.

Am AIBU to be horrified by this stained holy thing found in a shed? And the fact that its actually being SOLD..

That is disgraceful and eBay ought to remove the listing - that could be a serious danger to a newborn.

The sale of used cot mattresses should be banned on eBay IMO.

The seller also deserves to be banned from eBay.

My not-terribly-hygienic 4 yr old has just seen this and said "it's diiirty" in eeeww tones - that's saying something!

Yes, you should always buy the mattress new. I got given lots of stuff for DS but the one thing I spent a fair bit of money on was a new mattress for DS. Not a foam one, got him a coconut-matting stuffed and sprung mattress - so glad I did, he was such a HOT baby, he'd never have coped on a foam mattress.

From the posting though, they dont seem to understand that this isnt a good idea? That there may be mould spores etc in it?

I have sold/donated both a cot mattress and a cotbed mattress. However, I would not sell them with the idea of them being used for newborns - as far as I know the cot bed mattress was used for a 2 year old for occasional use at Grandparents, and the cot mattress donated to a rehouse vulnerable mum with a 9mo.

No one is saying you have to actually put a baby to bed on it though. If it was local to me, I'd have it to put on top off my rabbit hutch to try to keep the poor things a bit warmer in this weather. It could have many and varied uses - although clearly most sane people wouldn't use it for a baby I would hope.....

hasten to add both mine were in as new condition though, and nothing like that!!

It would be very sad if someone did use it for a child, not realising the dangers.

Once covered, I would imagine that some of the rescue dogs I deal with would be bloody grateful for it. They might chew it and will doubtless walk on it with wet paws so it wouldn't matter but I wouldn't dream of putting a baby on it.

But if anyone is nearby to the seller and would be able to collect then drop a cot mattress off to their nearest dog rescue, I'll pay the price of it and their petrol... :o

Yuck. Bad enough to buy have a 2nd hand mattress even worse if been stored in a shed, and worse still its stained.

2nd hand cot mattresses ok is some situations, I mean if you stay in a hotel its not a new mattress for your baby - so would be ok (if clean, and hadn't been stored in shed) if for occasional use at grandparents.
