...to not want to drive MIL to the farm shop?

Just had a text from MIL asking me to drive her to a farm shop.

Ordinarily I'd do it no worries. I get on fine with MIL and she often helps out with the kids, so as she doesn't drive I offer to take her shopping/doctors appointments etc.

But the roads are still really icy here, and the farm shop is about 5 miles away down country lanes that won't have seen a grain of salt. I'll have both DDs in the car as well.

Would it be U just to say 'sorry but I've already made plans', then offer later to take her to a supermarket where the roads won't be as scary?

Why are you even asking ?
Just tell her you aren't driving anywhere today because of the state of the roads. Only those whose journeys are essentially should be out and about.

Why not be honest? As a non-driver she may not have considered the roads en route. Just say - sorry but I wouldn't feel safe, can I take you to supermarket instead?
YANBU for not wanting that drive.

humanoctopus · 21/12/2010 09:47

I would just ring her and say that you think the road to the farm shop is unsafe.

If she doesn't drive, she may not have considered that fact.

I wouldn't bother lying about having something else on.

When you tell her that the road is unsafe, you could add that you are soooo glad that you can be honest with her, unlike some other's MIL!

Just tell her the truth, that it's too dangerous.

So yes you would be unreasonable to make up a silly excuse when the truth is perfectly acceptable.

fel1x · 21/12/2010 09:48

dont lie about having other plans! just tell her the truth that the roads are too bad and you are too nervous to drive on them but you are happy to drive her on main roads to a supermarket instead...

monkeyflippers · 21/12/2010 19:40

Yeah just tell her the truth, it's too dangerous! She can't complain about that.

rovercat · 21/12/2010 19:46

As with everyone else, just say its too icy. If she's like my mum (who can't drive) she will have no idea what driving on snow and ice can be like and won't have given it a thought.

SkyBluePearl · 21/12/2010 19:58

yes i agree just say the roads will be sheet ice and too dangerous but you can take her to the supermarket on the main road instead

My test for AIBU where MIL is involved is how would I react if my mum asked?

Tell her the truth, absolutely no reason to lie
