Before I start can I state if you are suffereing mental health problems please get checked out and get some support, do not let this thread put you off in any way!

Ok first of all if I had posted this "I am having chest tightness, pains when breathe in, bad wheezing when laughing, some mild wheezing other times, feel spaced out, dizzy when bend down/stand up, palpatations and inhaler helped wheezyness but not other symptoms. And have been seeing a cardiologist for on going tachycardia and been diagnosed with asthma and last month was admitted to hosp twice due to heart rate" Would you have told me to see a Dr? So aibu for having gone to GP today with those symptoms? I woke up like it this morning, so went back to bed, then tried eating and none of that helped me feel any better. (I was most worried about the spaceyness feeling tbh)

Ok so go to Dr and see one I have never met. She immediately says well you look fine. You are not having a heart attack - I didnt suggest for one minute I was, and if I did I would have gone to A&E. Was just wanting to check not another chest infection, and some advice on when/how often to use inhaler as still waiting for asthma clinic appointment.

She said my pulse very fast (well yes...) and said it was probably because I was at Dr, I explained no its always like that and has been recorded on monitors as being fast even when asleep. She looked at me like this Hmm

Then she asked if I was on drugs - some drugs can make heart fast. I said no! I told her yesterday I was working at a Christening and then on evening shift as a counsellor, not out partying! Then she asked if I had taken any drugs like (something begining with T, one of those drugs that relax you)as she said that could be making me spacey. Then she asked if I had been drinking recently, christmas party season, maybe too much alcohol. No I dont drink at all. She looked like this Hmm again.

Then she made me blow in the asthma thing and after each blow I had a chest cough fit that was sore. So she heard that. (you cant fake a chesty cough it sounds different!)

Then she asked me if I was anxious about anything in life maybe thats why I was ill. I told her no I was actually quite chilled out and happy, nothing out of ordinary, and had just woke up this morning like this,, have been fine for weeks, apart from when go from being in cold to hot air then I get pain breathing in and feel tight chested.

She then started quizzing me on that, hot to cold air or cold to hot? which is it? thats unusual usually its hot to cold that catches breath and looked again like this Hmm with a smirk. Its defiently when I am out in cold then come in to house/shop I feel worse. I thought it was odd and posted on asthma thread - many agreed with me that although medical literature says other way they feel same.

I felt like she was dismissing the way I feel and trying to constantly pass me off as being anxious. Oh she also said with a smirk "you have had quite a few Dr visits about this" err yes! And on a few occasions have been admitted to hosp and been kept in becaus eof symptoms - because I have visable and recordable symptoms. Not because I am anxious!

I have a history of depression, which is fine just now. Honestly 100% fine. I feel normal, appropriate responces to every day situations. Not low/depressed and weepy AT ALL. (note I do not even have a history of anxiety! I just more got low, lethargic and found it difficult to function, but got counselling and meds and it helped hugely.)

I feel like because she has seen this she has decided thats what my chest pain/pulse is about. In that case I must be anxious all the time as in gym my pulse goes crazy high, when watching tv I still get pain breathing in! Oh and coughing up green phlem - I suppose thats anxiety coming out my body is it?!

I am not denying people have chest pain etc because of anxiety - my firend does. But she seemed unable to take my word that no I am not stressed. She sent me home to relax. Hmm She says I maybe dont have asthma - 3 hosp Drs and a cardiologist have said they think I do, and that was after being in hosp with them monitoring me lots, she saw me for 5 mins.

So AIBU to think in some cases a diagnosis of mental health probs, whether current or in my case past, on medical records can cause Drs to assume any symptoms as psychosomatic (if thats the right word?)

It's lazy medicine. Yes breathing problems, palpitations etc can be caused by anxiety/depression but they can also be caused by other complaints. The breathlessness whilst laughing and light-headedness when bending don't sound like any anxiety related issue I've ever heard of.

I would complain to the practice manager and ask for a case review. Luckily you're already seeing specialists but some other poor sod might not be so fortunate- imagine if she was the first doctor you'd reported your symptoms to.

giraffesCantDanceOnAllThisSnow · 20/12/2010 18:15

dont worry shes not bothering me at all, have seen her post random rubbish on many peoples thread before, just wanted to justify myself for any others reading. Oh and I have letter from hosp about chest xray results should anyone decide not to believe me Wink Mind you all my revious posts show the exact process of my diagnosis, CDs posts show many many occasions of posting crap.

frosty I agree, thats something I have said to pixie before that ventolin makes me feel ill - but it was before I took it I was feeling like it. I have to feel really bad to take it, I try to avoid it tbh. It was the wheezy laughter thing that made me take it.

A practice nurse once tried to tell my that my acute laryngitis was being caused by the depression I had suffered from two years previously.

coldtits thats bizzare!

Thanks pixie - I really want the clinic appointment so I can discuss how often to take it. Letter arrived saying am on list. Mind you they might take my ventolin off me (despite fact it helps!) because I am faking it for fun. Wink

classydiva - if your ex has depression then there is something wrong with him Hmm.

coldtits · 20/12/2010 18:31

No no, not bizarre, I had mental helth problems and OBVIOUSLY that means I'm mental, and therefore a liar.

narkypuffin · 20/12/2010 18:32

I'm thinking her ex had a very real physical problem as well.

sparky258 · 20/12/2010 18:33

yep-the gp dont sound at all good giraffe.
i feel you should see another doctor as you say that you have green phlem-im not a doctor but that sounds like a infection!

ok-ill try and keep this short-
i use ventolin-and this does make my pulse race sometimes.
i get pains in my chest-this is because of having to breathe harder/diffrent/shallower
a lot of the time.

i sometimes feel spaced out-this is because of less oxygen going round me-other times its the ventolin.

the ventolin causes palpatations!

yep-it hurts to breathe in sometimes and laughing sometimes makes it worse[or i have coughing fits]

have they given you a "preventer" aswell?
obviously none of this is pleaseant-but i hope it helps Giraffe[it sometimes helps if someone is in a simmallar situation]
[dont stop using the ventolin even though it has side affects]
if you want to ask me anything-feel free!
good luck!

narkypuffin · 20/12/2010 18:37

There have been times I've thought about whipping a hand puppet out of my bag in the doctor's office and insisting that he act as intermediary. If they're going to act like you're crazy you may as well enjoy it...

And if this is how they are with basic vanilla depression, I truly pity anyone with more complex mental health issues trying to get access to ordinary medical care.

pommedeterre · 20/12/2010 18:37

I went to drs a few years ago with wheezing, shortness of breath, chest pains, passing out, coughing up blood.
Diagnosed with panic attack for three months going back to see her every 2 weeks or so.
Needless to say it wasn't.
Silly, arrogant cow

BalloonSlayer · 20/12/2010 18:37

My Mum couldn't bear to take ventolin because of the racing heart adrenaline-rush feeling it gave her.

narkypuffin · 20/12/2010 18:39

Blood Pommedeterre? Since when do panic attacks produce blood???

She thought I'd got a normal cough as in one from a cold and had irritated my throat so much I was coughing up bloody mucus.
She really was a knob.

giraffesCantDanceOnAllThisSnow · 20/12/2010 18:41

Thanks sparky, I was having all those symptoms before I took the ventolin. The ventolin makes me feel light headed. I often have a fast heart, have had a heart monitor which has showed its tachycardic even when asleep. No they just gave me that to check it did help - it does. They mentioned maybe at clinic getting preventor when see asthma specialist.

Yes sparky when I had green phlem, cough, wheeze and chest pain before it was infection (which showed up on xray) infact I am sure theres a pic of letter on profile as I asked someone to decipher dr writing.

sparky can I ask you about the cold weather affecting your breathing? I feel worse when I come out of cold in to warm, feel tight chested and wheezy. Took me a while to realise everytime it happened it was when I was coming out of cold.

What a muppet.

narkypuffin · 20/12/2010 18:45

I had childhood asthma and when I went into the cold air had to breathe through my nose- preferably through a scarf- to protect my chest.

Is there something like that for people who have the cold to hot thing?

I know quite breathtaking really, especially as I kept going back so much.
I actually had multiple pulmonary embolisms in both lungs with enlarged heart due to internal pressure .
I probably owe her one in some respects - because it was so bad they tested me A LOT for lots of things and eventually diagnosed Hughes Syndrome which meant that when we started ttc and I was preggers I was totally aware of risks/medication etc and very well monitored.
Always a bright side!

Hmm if you don't get on with ventolin in the aerosal type you xan always ask about bricanal on the turbo. Inhaler less likely to cause the racing heart rates and is a reliever drug to

and yes the change in air can trigger being breathless. Be that cold To hot or vice versa

and the heart rate can make you feel bit odd mine is fast to there now looking into why but I just accept it's one of those things

faverolles · 20/12/2010 19:06

Pixie - (sorry, been a while, pesky rl gets in the way!)
The drug is montelukast. The dr rang me 2 weeks ago (having kept it on repeat prescription all those months)
Luckily my dsis is a dr and looked into it for me, the problem is that there haven't been many trials done on it, but it doesn't appear to be a problem. I'm 34 weeks now, so when I saw a different dr, we agreed it would be pointless to come off it now!
